GM owned opal didn't theyversion of GM`s petrol sixes. Strange thing was it had the Opal logo
Drove one of those as well, had a ‘71 or ‘72 one when on BT, used to rattle your fillings on tickover. It was nicer than the alternative, a BMC FG though! My ‘78 TK is a 4 pot diesel. Gutless, but more fuel efficient than nine to the gallon!
I enquired about one of these years back for conversion to a recovery truck. Ex military 4WD Huge winch & generator fitted a tipper too. Ideal for the project. It was located at a rubish tip but owner was asking far too much. Ended up burnt out and buried on the tip. Serves owner right for being too greedy. Got NOTHING for it.There is an early or late 300 Petrol. The early engine is a Chevrolet design used in Europe under licence by Opel and Bedford, and Holden 'Down under'. The early type is known as a 'stovebolt 6' ( about which there is loads online) built from 1929-55. The later type petrol engine was introduced in the UK in 1957 and is derived from the diesel engine according to this article https://archive.commercialmotor.com/article/15th-february-1957/52/sweepim-hanges-in-bedfords
I had an ex AFS RL for ten years or so , you might find a few videos on YT. I would agree with previous post about backfiring- the Green Goddess engines were upjetted ( so even less mpg) to counteract this and also running at full load stationary for pumping, my RL would often foul plugs. I did love it though. View attachment 336179
Surprised the a series didn't catch fire when trying to start in the cold with a burning rag on a stickmany moons ago the co i wont mention bought a job lot of Bedford J3,s, 3.3 petrol, 10 mpg with a 10 gallon tank so if you went any distance you took some jerries in the cab, luckily they all blew up / caught light /crashed and were replaced with Ford A series
i had a 220 diesel in a 109 landrover, that was fun to drive![]()

I just wrote it as it was written Boss.I used to have an early 70`s petrol tk, I thought it had a 3.3ltr Cresta engine but was told it was actually a version of GM`s petrol sixes. Strange thing was it had the Opal logo cast into the thermostat housing so god only knows what it really was

They were a fine machine, not many left as they rotted faster than most. The mid 70s ones are a really nice looking motorI just wrote it as it was written Boss.
Ive not seen an Opel for years and even then it was only the odd manta.
