Bead Roller - suggestions please

Having missed out on one in the "For Sale" section recently and as a result looked at what they can do, I've decided it would be a useful addition to my tools. I have a number of plates to make for my Triumph Stag where a consistent bead (rather than the wide variation I get using a hand-joggler) would make life a lot easier.

I saw the comments about motorising them and I probably have enough bits and pieces to do that, but what is the brand to go for?

I am a hobbyist, it won't get a terrific amount of use and I'm also a skinflint, so looking for a balance between price and quality! I will also be using my birthday money on it, so I will know how much that is tomorrow :-)

i have a cheapy one i bought off ebay a few years ago, made in china type of thing. As expected, it was pretty average (i knew this long before i bought i, but decided i couldnt make the dies for teh same price as the whole china set up) so i reinforced it as per a few other threads on here and other places. Lately i also made a few more mods including a new lower axle, with modified winch/angle grinder concoction to enable it to be powered. Ill get some pictures next time im at work (its currently in a corner there waiting to be finished and brought home) its not exactly perfect, but its more than capable of doing a decent job now, it would be a mistake to buy one without expecting to modify it though in my opinion..... I honestly dread to think how many hours ive got in mine now, way, way more than would be considered sensible, i could have bought a decent one for far less, but i enjoyed doing the mods, so meh.......

Any questions, shoot, ill be more than happy to answer where i can, but im far from an expert!! If i dont put pictures up on monday, feel free to give me a nudge, ive got a brain like a sieve.....

I had the one for sale recently, when I bought it I found loads of ideas for modifying them on an american metalworking site.I can't remember the site name or even if it exists now but there was a whole section devoted to bead rollers.
I added an extra spring to help lift the top arm when the adjusting bolt was released, I also fitted a car steering wheel to it as the movement with a wheel is more consistant than with the lever supplied.Future plans were to have it motorised with a car wiper motor operated by a foot switch.Adding a guide fence was also something to do as was a big table to rest the metal on as it is moved through the wheels.
Skateboard wheels are sometimes used along with a tipping die.

Have used Lazze and other motorized versions which of course are better but comparing price and how much it is used I'm pleased with my simple model so far.

I bought a cheap eBay one like AnderK and out of the box it's pretty poor.
You really need two people to operate it.
However when I stiffened it up and added a better wheel adjustment and then powered drive it turned in to a great tool.

I was going to do a thread on it when it's finished - still need to put a guard on the chain and sprocket and tidy up the wiring, but I'll post a few photos of the almost finished article when I get home later today.

The cheap ones have great potential if you spend a bit of time sorting the obvious design flaws.

The motor and gearbox I bought on the for-sale forum on here, the inverter I bought cheap on ebay a while ago and the pedal controlling the speed is off the daughters Roland electric piano.
I need to replace the pedal but they are only £32 new. I put another micro switch in it but it comes with a 10K pot so also perfect for a cheap foot pedal for the my tig welder.
I put an adjustable guide on it which is good when running straight beads.

It now works great and I can just close the wheels and run beads in one pass.
