I was in Canada with an ex a few years back, it was a late spring and the brown bears (and grizzlies!) were coming lower and closer to the roads and towns than usual... you'd see cars screech to a halt to start taking pics. I remember one guy getting out and tiptoeing up to a foraging brown bear to film it, easily within a couple of metres of it in shorts and flipflops (him, not the bear). Somehow I don't think he'd have been outrunning it 
We get quite a few seals up here on Teesside (clue: Seal Sands
) - they come upriver to the Stockton barrage to bag salmon, or trout, or the five-eyed spiny codfish that live in the lovely clean waters of the Tees.
