Need your help with this please

I have been given a very good nearly new bbq but the previous owner has miss placed the cooking grill. Can i make one out of mild steel round bar and just fire up the bbq a few time to burn off any residue and contaminents or would it need to have a fancy coating of something or other on it?

I made my barbeque, (ex water heater tank) and was completing making the grille, then the wife came home with a couple of them from the garden center, so never bothered, to be honest they're cheap enough, not worth the ballache.. by the time you buy the steel, weld them up....

It all depends, I use my BBQ three or four times a week and prefer some thing a little heavy duty, so I use 6mm rebar I get free from a site I go to, to make my grills. This is time consuming but you get a better surface to cook on in my opinion.

Of course but not galv. I never realy clean the grill just get it proper hot before adding food

Ive had a look at buying the replacement grills designed for this bbq and they are £40 each and theres 2 of them hench why i was going to make my own. I know it will be a bit of a pain but that doesnt bother me. I was just checking if i need to bother getting them coated or just get them made and get them hot a few time. From what i can tell there only round bar with what usually looks like chrome on them which doesnt take long to burn of and your cooking on the steel anyway.

Once this snow goes away it will be getting used alot so like parm i can make them stronger to last longer

The more you use it the better it will get. When I finish using mine I leave all the food residue till the next time when I heat it up good and proper then a light scrub with a wire brush and its good to go

Brundles do a proper bbq grill sheet. Its quite thin wire but it is either plated or ss

Correct no coating required, the more you use it the more natural carbon will be deposited and the better the grill will perform

Well following on to this i finally got myself into gear and picked up some bar and got to making the grills








A perfect fit well as close as haha

You season the bars with veg oil, like a steel wok, or pan.

That looks like an old 'Outback' bbq. I've got one of those. It would have originally had cast iron grill plates I think. We use ours 4 or 5 times a week even in the winter. Nothing better than properly grilled food. (Not burnt to a crisp food!)

I'm with you on that, also BBQ 3 to 4 times a week but always charcoal

Rescued this set of cast iron pans yesterday, bit disappointing as they are poor quality castings made in Taiwan, but hey ho beggars can't be choosers. No one can be arsed to season cast iron pans anymore so they often get thrown away.
