yes they used to be es screw in uk then changed to bayonet and abroad were es screw . now pretty standard es everywhere

In B&Q they only sell screw in bulbs but, all the diy fittings (new bulb sockets etc) are all bayonet. Its only the full light fittings that are screw in.

There are GU & G bulbs as well , we don't possess any ES or bayonet lamps in the bungalow , sorted that out 15 ys ago when the bungalow was rewired . It enabled us to get some really nice light fittings ( 
over £1800 for the whole place including the bulbs ).
I've changed the first four 240 bulbs this month , previously it was six or seven 50 watt halogen lamps a month , more in winter .

Think it is more to do with filling a gap in the current market for bayonet & pendant bulbs . I suspect that they will disappear in the next 10 yrs or so as production runs won't be big enough to be commercially effective .
Last week I picked up three Tesco 9 watt led bulbs ( bayonet pears ) for my log cabin office anti frost & office & equipment moisture control … two wired in parallel on baton holder mounts screwed to a 40 mm thick chunk of spare log cabin wall wood .
At 18 watts hr total consumption it's cheap enough to leave them on all day all year if it's crappy weather like this last year has been .

you will find pendants in houses are still bayonet and all bulbs available but pre wired fittings are mainly ses small Edison screw

I was told bayonets are being phased out as house fires had been linked to them, but I can't see how.

its where you buy them from thats phasing them out
most places like b&q, aldi, argos, ikea all import foreign screw fittings not the uk bayonet fittings this has to be changed here if you want it
also noted is this come across many a light fitting that been wired wrong and has blown the light fuse on turn on

They were available many years ago, when old houses were screw in, when all you could get was the ‘new’ bayonet

On screw fittings the bulbs never sit straight in the holder either, they're always cocked off to one side, annoying if it's a nice fitting with a bulb on show.
After some time the tab at the bottom bends down and looses contact with the bulb meaning it needs bending back up.

I was always of the understanding that bayonet was the british standard, I have some very very old B22 fittings in a box, from when you used to plug appliances into the light fitting. I though it was the EU that brought in all this screw fitting rubbish.
