Battery Jump Starter recommendations?.

Hello everyone.

I've been asked to look into a vehicle starter jump pack for our Scout Minibuses and Van.

What's everyone using for Diesels up to 3l?.

I would have said Portable Power (our Snap-on branded PP is probably 20 years old now) but don't think the budget will allow that.

Just interested to see what stands the test of time.

Norco seem hit and miss reliability wise?.

Thoughts on mains car battery boosters?

I have a number of classics with draining batteries this time of year. Impossible to keep up with at times. Thinking of one of these from Lidl NI in this Thursday May also be useful for diagnostics to keep a good voltage in the car in use without engine running. But likely too undersized for...

I have a Noco GB40 and that's started my 3.0 diesel Surf.
Slow turnover but did the trick.

Portable Jump Starters

Been thinking about getting one to throw in the glovebox. Currently have jump leads, But sometimes you don't have the assistance to help! Don't want to spend mega bucks as I will hopefully not be using it often Also would be good as a USB Powerbank What have people got that you recommend?

i got a Topdon js3000 that has impressed me so far,
first few uses didnt even turn the engine over... but did make smoke pour out the starter... turns out the engine had seized

but the old farmec digger's battery is just about knackered, enough for maybe half a revolution before giving up, that topdon booster started it no problem whatsoever about 6 times before the battery read 75%

From previous experience several things spring to mind, none of which actually answers your question

If you regularly need a jump pack, the vehicle battery is stuffed, or people using it haven't worked out you can't leave it, engine off, everything on.

If they haven't worked that out, can they really work out how to connect a jump pack?

You will end up with a flat vehicle battery, and a flat jump pack, as it's always someone else's job to charge either . . .

why does it require a boost pack ? does it sit for long periods snd alarm/ immobiliser etc etc gradually discharge the battery ?

I'd go with a battery and jump leads plus an "intelligent" charger to keep topped up on a sack truck.

I like my Yaber, good spec, it works and a good diffuse light on it - most seem to have a focused spot light.

MattF found a Utrai which has as good a spec but quite a bit cheaper. Then theres a Gooloo4000 that has had some proper testing by 8ob and others, so that works well.

@angellonewolf would you mind trying the DC output? It comes with a cigarete socket adaptor. Mine cuts out if I try anything in the socket. I have to charge the starter to reset it. One of the reasons I got this one was the dc output. You can use the starter for DC but only lasts 30 seconds. I...

As mentioned before. WHY do you need a jump pack? who will be responsible for keeping it charged? I appreciate (possibly more than most, having been a scout leader myself) That you need the van(s) to start immediately you load the little darling in it. But that is where regular maintenance and training of the drivers is important

When you have a farmyard of intermittently used and rather ancient machinery you need a jump pack, believe me! I’ve tried on vehicle solar, they vibrate off or succumb to frost and animals. I’ve numerous chargers, even have a mains powered one capable of directly starting large equipment, but in my view the pack wins every time. Portable, cariable and reliable.
I’ve had my Gooloo 4000a for just over a year now and think that it’s the best thing since sliced bread !

I got a GB noco something or other can't remember the model, got much bigger than I will need, used it to start van it still says it's fully charged, cheaper variants are available

I watched the jump start comparison vid in the link above well it's in one of the threads, only 2 managed to start the big derv and one was the noco, the other never heard of.

one would do the job, however I want it within the next half hour.

Bought a gooloo 4000 something this year and it was brilliant during recent frosts and less than half the price of equivalent noco. Got loads of usb type plugs for charging phones etc. as well and a built in torch. Think it'll do 8l but certainly spins over 6l diesel no bother. Only complaint is the battery cables are a bit on the short side.

If you need a jump starter is it because they are stood unused?
If so I feel you would be better keeping the battery topped up with a plug in charger or solar?
Letting batteries discharge is very bad for them.
We have Noco's, one each they are fantastic and will start a totally dead vehicle some starters require a certain level of charge in the batteries

I had a noco GB70, about 2000 amps I think or whatever the measurement is. Was ok, but now got a gooloo 4000gt and it's much better for less than half the price. Presume it's due to it being twice the size rather than intrinsically better, I'm sure any make of 4000a would be just as good, as the saying goes there's no replacement for displacement!
