Hello, I have my old Clarke 100E mig which I bought new back in the olden days (ca '82). It's pretty low mileage as I never really got on with it - I used to have feed problems, but that could just have been me as a teenager, although it seems to be a weakness with cheaper machines. However, I recall reading on here that they're not bad for what they are. I've moved it from house to house and am increasingly wanting to resurrect it and maybe do any tweaks available - the swapping out plastic liner seems to be an easy improvement for starters.
However, I've just seen an ad for a working Cemont Dual Mig 140 for not much more than what it would cost to sort out the Clarke. Researching on here this morning, they seem to again be "not dreadful" so question 1 is, is this a better machine than my Clarke?
Q 2 is that there were threads about a ca £160 IGBT "uptime" (et al) inverter welder which seems also to be not rubbish - is that a better bet than the above?
Portability & size, although nice, is less of an issue as I work in or outside my shed. Main use would be welding ca 3mm mild steel sheet sculptures. I'd use my Oxford arc jobbie for any thicker structural elements. This would have hobby/intermittent use rather than day in day out. I've read loads of "new mig" threads and they invariably seem to end up on a near-£500 machine, which is just not an option in the foreseeable future.
Many thanks
