Ive never bought into the long life myth ,,, oil is a cheap mechanic.
As long as oil meets the spec I dont care where it comes from or what it says on the tin. Some times I swap the oil filters out mid service as I think its very overlooked , oils these days are better than they ever were and filters the same , clean oil is the secret to happy engines hence the filter swapping, only takes a few mins and a top up of the oil and all is good.
I have never gone as far as having any of it analysed but all the stuff I have drained out of my modern cars looks just as good after 25-30k as the stuff I used to drain out at 5k 20yrs ago!
I know that car manufacturers like to promote long service intervals to increase the appeal to fleet customers but in have run a few trucks like this in the last few years and run them hard into the ground.
I think the manafactures have come up with ways of making the oils last that long rather than just increased the service intervals to look good on paper.
The modern engine/oil technology seems to do the job fine to me, last truck I got rid of was because all the seats had fallen apart and everything else had worn out at 150k+
Engine was the best part of it and had been running 20k+ intervals.
It would be different if it was a car I loved or wanted to last a lifetime but on a work truck I'd rather run the longer intervals and use the money I save to buy a newer truck sooner!
