Avon skin so soft is the stuff apparently......designed for some other reason but midges hate it
Brain fade!!
When you say van, you dont mean caravan do youI will be doing the NC500 in my van at some point, So I apologise in advance for causing any pain to the local residents
The extra 29,000 visitors the NC500 has attracted is only around 200 extra a day in the summer months
I heard of it and looked at the pictures....fancied doing it, towing my caravan....until I did some research and realised its not for caravans (although a fair few do) and its probably too busy.

Thats just what I thought.....I saw one near John O Groats so you could travel round including the Islands (Orkney is it?).Better off coming up and staying on a site then doing day trips from there to wherever you want. No point dragging a van round the whole route just for the sake of it, if you only have a few days then chose one area and stick to enjoying things within an hour or so of base camp. Much more enjoyable. Too many folks wanting tick off bucket lists and not really getting the larger picture.
Lack of suitable facilities for motorhomes in particular on the NC500 and the rest of the Highlands/Islands is an issue. My parents run a small site which isn't too far off the main NC500 track and they have been open since mid July but have had problems this year with no shows for short notice pitch bookings.
Sites remaining closed just now are really not helping things and I have no idea how they can say they are not opening for an entire season. I hope it isn't because they are living off government money. Not everyone can live in beautiful places and I have great sympathy for those who have been cooped up for months looking forward to seeing a bit of the country getting out only to find inhospitable locals and basic services closed down and the few places that are open overrun. Social media encourages the pitchfork brigade in a very damaging way.
Too many motorhomers though prefer to park in passing places or other places they don't have to pay. Part of the selling point of the lifestyle I suppose is you can easily stop where you want/when you want and not have to book, harder to do that in a caravan/tent. I think Scottish Gov need to update planning laws and give guidance to local councils to help enable lots more small scale sites/pitches in the right places where they gravitate to naturally which should bring money into the local communities. Linking up booking systems to help people find pitches at short notice locally would be good as well.
Avon skin so soft - let me help you there as my wife sells many bottles of it every year and can have it delivered to your door - but as for midgies so far not too bad this year however nothing beats a midge net!
No shows, without any explanation or apology, is just bad manners. What's wrong with people!!
A lot of them really dont think it matters, its not costing anything. Caravan Club have a system where you can book a year ahead, no deposit and cancel upto a few days before with no penalty.......all the weekends get booked up and then you cant book a full week......No shows, without any explanation or apology, is just bad manners. What's wrong with people!!
There are lots of stories about the stuff.....citronella in or out.....another chemical begins with a P....in or out?
Ive no idea
Still being pushed by many as the most effective
Hopefully the NC500 will get more bad press and the concept will implode. With any luck the NC500 will go the way of the Ben Lawers visitor centre.

Traffic is very slow along the north coast section at the moment (19.00).
