Band saw info LS&W

So I was at a place where we get a few bits an bobs from for work but I came across this beast I did a few google searches but couldn't see any information so guessed I May as well ask on here



Would it be more for wood then metal an is it worth saving

Deffo worth saving if it can be had for right money. Its old and cast iron so it will knock the socks of any of the new crap once set up right. You just need the right speed and blade to cut metal.

Appears to be a vintage woodworking mortising machine, that looks like the table standing vertically on the left. Can't see enough of the top to show the operating mechanism. I would guess maybe 30's 40's.

It's a lovely bit of kit I've just got a feeling as it weights so much they are goin to want good money for it what would you say I should pay for it ?

I'm tempted to think the same as Mackie in that it doesn't appear to be a bandsaw from the photo's.

Price wise, pick a number. Many things will affect worth. The type of place trying to sell it, (are they a scrapyard or a used machinery dealer?), what you personally think it's worth combined with how much work you're willing to put into sorting it and what your time is worth. That will need quite a bit of work, even if it's in generally decent nick. Personally, if it's a scrapyard type place, I'd likely tentatively offer upto double what it's worth as scrap metal. They'll make a proft from that, and you should be getting it at a reasonable enough price to make the work it needs worthwhile. Also remember that the large industrial gear doesn't merit a premium like smaller stuff. 3 phase and large means it has appeal to only a very limited group, whereas smaller single phase stuff has broad appeal, so add that into your decision process too.

It's a sort of scrap salvage yard they weigh in a lot of stuff but before they do you can go look an get bits on bobs what would you think it is if not a band saw ? An I'm guessing the motor is missing anyway

Mackie said the same as I was thinking, namely morticer, though it's only a guess. If you could get some more photo's of it, especially the top half, that would help.

It used to be like that but I have been looking for decent 3 phase horizontal bandsaw for months and found none suitable. ;(

It's a nice big old machine but how many slots do you need to cut in wood and how much space do you have to keep it?

I have loads of space for it an I wanted it for metal if it is in fact a band saw at all

I would be swayed more towards a band saw the part ive arrowed looks to me to be the adjustable blade guide which you would adjust closer to the work piece
to take the play out of the blade

I agree as morticers normally have a back fence, clamp and sliding table, none of which I can see in the pic. Plus why would you need a huge throat on a morticer. Looks to me like a bandsaw with a tilting table.

A look at the other side, where the blue thing is please ---I`m half happy with a bandsaw, but wheres the wheels and where and how do they attach ?? The bottom wheel would be in front of the electic switch but there does not seem to be any means to mount it, the top pulley would be in the same plane - above the bottom wheel + a tensioner adjuster for blade tension.
