balls up or splatters!

I had a go today on a mates Clarke welder, it welded really nice and it was really smooth, just a little crackle now and again but mostly smooth. My SIP topmig on the other hand welds ok but never makes such a smooth sound, it either balls on the end of the wire a little or splatters but never sounds smooth, weld is ok I guess though.

Any idea why it does this? I've got a steel liner, separate Power supply for wire feed motor and a clamp on the roller! What else do I need to do to this bloody thing to work well until I get a decent one?

Does your mate's set have the same wire type and size fitted and is he using the same gas as you have on your set

If you get a ball on the end of the wire you either need to turn you wire speed up or your power down, if you are getting a lot of big lumps of spatter you either need to turn your wire feed down or your voltage up, just a matter of tuning it in right. If you can't tune it in it could be your machine needs looking at.

he's using co2 i'm using boc argomix, both on .6 wire, i'll have another play but can never seem to get it right on mine, yet when i set his up its fine.
