Finally managed to get a sensible pair of lads round. One went up for a look and the crown mortar is coming off in lumps. 2 cracked tiles to replace and they are going to take our pot off and cap the flue. We certainly arent going to be putting it back in use .
They are also going to repoint the flashings in on our side

I know exactly how it goes.
We fit woodburners, as a company, we're always removing/adding pots, 're flaunching etc.
99% of our jobs are done off ladders. If that's not possible we use a cherry picker, if that's not possible, scaffolding.
We're south Yorkshire based. Although we see 6'pots about, I don't think in 12 years we have ever had to deal with one. 3' is probably the biggest we had to work with. If it's cracked, or if the access is sketchy, that would get smashed up. But sometimes they come down on the shoulder too.

I'll add, not by me. I'm scared of heights! But the ex roofer lad who does the work 'up top', is happy, even though it's 100% always up to him if he is happy with the situation.

Surely you should be using cherry pickers or scaffolding for every job, a risk assessment would dictate that ladders are not appropriate, if one of your men fell off and had live changing injuries they could sue the hell out of the company, not to mention the HSE sticking their nose in?

We're a group of self employed folk, it's up to each individual what they are prepared to do.

But, if every time we had to go up to a chimney we had to use a cherry picker or scaffolding, the whole trade would go out of business!
Not just us, there are a fair few fitting companies in our town, all of them work of ladders.

I have never heard of a stove fitter that always, 100% of the time, uses a cherry picker or scaffolding.
Cherry pickers and scaffolding are only viable when there is no other reasonable option.

Your usual 2 up 2 down terrace, or 3 bed semi, just stick the ladders up.

its really because customers wont pay for it thats the truth

and if they do the companies go in and dont use the scaffolding just use a set of ladders

so really its a catch 22 situation from both sides of the coin

for light safe work even an ariel fitter has to be careful and thats only light work on a ladder and roof ladder

fitting loose slates is the same

theres a bit more weight with a chimney and handerling the chimney pot but to be honest really it should have h frame scaffolding up then a roof ladder but even that is vague on safety

sliding that stainless steel down the chimney is fun whilst balancing up there really its a 3 man job but no customer wants to pay for 3 men on the job even if its for the working guys safety they dont care

Lads came today. Family firm dad and his lad. Grafted for a good couple of hours.
Ridge tile off so they could get at it properly.
Ive had the pot and gas cowl taken off so they could seal the flue as we wont use it.
Theyve re mortared the crown, replaced 3 broken tiles, fettled a bit of the flashing back down properly, and ground out and repointed where the flashing tops go into the brickwork. Tidied up their mess and wouldnt even tip their mortar bucket rinse water in our grid, insisted it went down a grid in the street.
Given them a glowing review and a tip.
