Ball Pein Hammer

ive got an almost new 2lb ball Pein hammer. It had a fibreglass shaft that's snapped off. Ive cleaned it all out and see that the hole is tapered, bit like a pick axe so the head won't fly off the shaft when being used.

Can you get a new shaft for these. Ive got a couple of spare Woden handles but they don't fit correctly

I remember my dad whittling one with one of his sheath knives (I've still got his knife collection)

I was told the shaft should be kept somewhere quite warm for a few days before fitting, if it is shaved to a tight fit it then gets even tighter once moisture renters the dried out wood.

Probably a bit OTT but the guy was a master carpenter so I suppose he knew the tricks of the trade.

yea just fill them with resin

Ok. I get that, ive sorted out two hammers today and used the little metal wedges and yes a little fettling was required, both turned out realy good.

The hole in the hammers ive fixed were parallel. With this ball Pein jobbie the hole is tapper, like that on a pick axe head. IF I fettle the wood one side will be perfect and the other too small

might be worth filling it with araldite on the outer side and still fit the wedge then

A power file with a really coarse belt is a god send when fitting new handles. Must have wasted several days of my life, over the years, doing it the old way with chisels planes and knives - now it's less than a five minute job.

Good idea. I suppose if the resin held then araldite will be ok too. I've got a new handle with the metal wedge

This was a skip find from a couple of weeks ago. It's brand new but the handle had been crushed, don't no how.

I don't actually need another hammer but nice to fix up and add to the other 40 or so hammers I've got

The way I was taught to rehandle hammers, axes and the like is to firstly take your time. You can't put the wood back on. Use a rasp or surform to remove the excess, check fit often. Once its close, cut down the centre of the rasped end, make the cut slightly deeper than the length of the wedge,a hacksaw will do, offer up to the hammer head, using a wooden mallet start hitting the end of the handle(don't hit the the hammer head on), do this with the head off the ground, once the handle is through put the wedge in the cut you made with the hacksaw. Cut off any excess wood that is sticking through the hammer head. Job done.

With joiner fitted shafts, they usually shave the end to be a good fit in the head, then cut down the end of the shaft not quite as deep as the head and drive in a hardwood wedge, final thing is to hammer in a steel serrated wedge across the wooden one.

That's exactly how I was shown how to fix a shaft onto an axe

Look up Wranglerstar on youtube, does homesteading videos but has made quite a few axe handles. He even cuts them from scratch from hickory

I always fit handles like that, the wooden wedge spreads the handle in it's longest section and the metal wedge holds it in place on something like a sledge hammer I'd use two metal wedges

why bother? cheap hammers are like £5.
just use it as a dolly.
