if i had to fix it i think it would be straight forward even for me and i a total noviceI do find my self looking at fabrication sometimes and wondering why it was left like that, one particular installation that drives me nuts are the access gates into Downing street believe it or not! they were redone and when you go through and look at gates system they do not meet up parallel its pretty poor job and i cringe every time. You would think if your a fabrication firm and win a tender to install a entry system at such a location you would do a damn fine job of it to promote yourself even if they are paying the lowest bidder.
Care to elaborate why you know those gates so well, is there something we need to know ????

Weld stair treads to the stringers quite often. Depends on the design of the stair

I was coming from the perfectionist meticulous type. Not the go through 5 litres of hand wash --take all your clothes of to have a dump type.

The "go through 5 litres of handwash" types of sufferers would be far more suited to aviation than the "perfectionist" types.
I'm not having a go at you, the public in general has a severe lack of misunderstanding of o.c.d and anxiety disorders mainly because of how the media has portrayed them.
O.c.d is a serious life destroying disorder and is far more complicated than liking things neat and tidy or clean.
Everything is always driven by cost. The consequences of such are rarely considered.

Hundreds of places. The main reason for bolting stair treads is convenience. Takes quite a while to set up to weld them in. Easier to drill a load of holes in flat bar/ channels etc and bolt them in.
Also easier to replace treads in places where they can be damaged easily, I.e quarries etc.
A fully welded staircase in inherentley stronger though and are used mainly where you have the tread trays filled with concrete. The last set we did were helical, with treads welded in. They trays were then inset with ply and finished. If you look at the poster for men in black international you can see them in the background just below the big ball.
Just a quick flick around Linkdn, throw these up, I think the lorry load may even be from a member on here, I’ve seen him post similar pics.

No, he’s been doing it either the way he wants, or the way the engineer / architect wants. Not wrong by any means. Just sounds like he’s not done a fully welded stair .

Tbh this is a new one for me . The short stairs have no welded riser but the home/office stairs do. This is done for aesthetics prevention of flex. Ok we will see how they hold up. Also one would argue that a bolt is worse idea look at the forces involved, if it is welded you are pulling across the strongest faces if you put a bolt in you are relying on the face and the weakest area
In effect its 1.5mm-3mm? Face vs 2x 50mm plates . Obviously you are relying on the total area of the weld but that could be more than the cross section of the bolt.

Stop firelighting --im allowed to disagree or agree with anyone regardless of who they are or what they do or how long they have been a member as long as things are kept respectful.
