Bad habit or simple fix?

Just lately i seem to be getting this habit of moving the torch away from the work area before releasing the trigger hence leaving me the annoying task of snipping off lenths of wire to start again.
I'm ok with a slower wire speed but atm i'm doing some 3mm stuff so the wire speeds up alot faster than normal but still end up with a 1'' or more to continue,is there a simple 123 now trick or do i need a good slap around the chops to sort out my technique

Try having a piece of scrap lying around, touching the work piece, and use it as a waste piece, just offer the torch to it and flick the switch, make an arc for a moment, burning the end off the wire, leaves the end of the wire the right length for the next proper weld.

When working at a bench this easy, when working on larger pieces I use the return lead clamp, just watch out for left overs stabbing you in the hand later.

Ah no! that's a horrible thing to do Chunko!! Your earth clamp will look like a porcupine, and you will damage it!

Besides, even with a bit more stick out you can get the arc started just fine...no need to chop it off after each weld!

That's the reason we bolt the earth leads to the welders benches at work
