Back up discs

I have 3 external HDDs, one is a 640Gb maxtor basics, one is a 320Gb Maxtor basics and one is a 500Gb packard bell easystore. Both the maxtors run sweet as a nut, are very quiet and cool running although neither have cooling fans. The PB one regularly overheated and cut out so I removed the drive from the enclosure and fitted it inside my pc, no problems since.
The PB one contained a Maxtor SATA drive, I expect the other two are the same.

Thanks for the recommendations about external HDDs and advice about a replacement disc for my monster - I'd no idea it was possible to get hold of replacements - might simplify things.

I think I am inclined to save a bit of cash and have a look at the smaller Maxtors for backups. Especially if I can smash them open and find a real HDD inside.

That's the odd thing Malcolm, they're just normal 3.5" HDDs inside but often you can get them cheaper than an internal HDD!
PC World have a Maxtor 500Gb external on offer at £49.99 at the mo or a 1Tb one for £79.99.

1TB I remember my first computer had a 4 gig H/D and I thought I would never fill it !

Hehe, yes, my first PC had a 3.2Gb and i was told I'd never fill it!
