I guess after all this the answer is simply no.Good Aftenoon all
Question; May I please ask, is it possible to get a long back cap for use in a WP 17 style torch fitted with stubby gas lens kit so you can use these new 175mm Tungstens full length?
There will be slightly more waste as there is a limit to the smallest that can be gripped so that will be doubled as you now have two tungstens. So say it was 15mm, you will be wasting 15mm that you wouldn't if you could have kept it in one length.Cutting them in half means NO wastage at all, you do realise you can use both half's.
The gas would come out of the hole if you cut the end of a back cap, just chop off the end and let the tungsten protrude a small amount

Personally I would just cut the tungstens in half and sharpen both ends, then get on with the welding instead of looking for solutions to non existent problems,
