They're mechanical, big, heavy, have lots of great engineering and if you follow the right type, they live and smell wonderful......what's not to like.....

To be honst I prefer the traction engine side, mainly because if I could ever afford a steam engine, I'd like to take it home.

I don't think SWMBO would take kindly to me arriving home with a 4.6.4 steam loco ...........


PS.

Saying that I'd love to strip a Deltic engine, they're similar to a 2 stroke blown/super charged/turbo'd Detroit Diesel Engine and the old 2 stroke commer diesel, in principle a Deltic's engine just a bit bigger...

Mr Dibnah was self employed, probably charged a fare price for his expertise/work (no amount of money would get me up one of those chimneys with just a few scaffold boards around the top). I've watched all his programs, admire his guts (or stupidity depending on the view held at the time), a true old school workman. He controlled his work/play time ratio, would have given Health & Safety the middle finger big style.

He lived in a abode with enough land to have large workshop area, store his toys and play things.

I on the other hand, I work for someone else, live in a modest house with a smallish back garden on a housing estate. Certainly not big enough for a full size traction engine, I could get away with a working scaled model possibly.

But I still don't have enough wedge to support 2 kids with an ex-wife, my current workshop, maintain/restore any size of steam engine, let alone buy one, they ain't cheap toys in the first place even as rusty heaps of scrap.

DK63, if you're ever over here and wish to visit the roundhouse I'm sure we could find you a bed for the night, plus a few beers and some nosh.

Quite jealous actually.

I was out in NZ in 2000 for 3weeks but only went as far south as smelly Rotorua. I can still remember some of the old cars abandoned by peoples houses, including a couple of Model T Fords.

I would love to come back with loads of money and buy some old cars for restoring.

Off topic really, but it's funny what sells here and what doesn't. They go crazy for big Bentleys, Rolls Royces and stuff, Ferraris and Lambos too, even the junk stuff from the 80s/90s seems to get big bucks. I've always fancied a Corvette Stingray, and when you see one going for just $16,000 it's quite tempting! (5.8 ltr ain't exactly economical though lol)

I'll bet a 5.8 ltr Corvette is cheaper to run in NZ, I believe your fuel prices are lower than in the UK (111 pence per ltr average over here), but still a hell of a lot cheaper to run than a Deltic.....

I remember must be well over ten years ago now a heritage train was loaded with fuel and the gauge was found to be faulty - in the middle of nowhere with no back up loco. They got help from a local farmer who filled it up with red diesel, think it was like a 33 or something...

Anyone know the fuel consumption of a Deltic.

At full bore they should burn about 900 litres of juice an hour, although you don't spend much time at full bore so the 4 tonnes or so capacity would probably last a shift.
