In the bus garage, the only stands were cubic lumps of timber.

There might be a good argument for cuboid rather than cubic.

With a cube, there is a possibility of loading the end grain. In other areas of fun, we call that a log splitter.

Ah, right enough. However, there may have been a habit to only sit them grain flat, as it were. As it happened, the only places the cubes would be used were on the flat bottom of the chassis rails. No stress raising points, and no splitting.

I used to do repair work like fellow in this photo. I was under a boxcar once and some jackshaft backed into it with a forklift. It was the only time in my life I ever filled my trousers. Fwiw, I put section of sound tree logs under vehicles as plan "b".

In an old feed mill,I made and installed the frame and couplings for a gearbox and power generator,the shaft went through the floor,into the stream below and connected to the turbine wheel,that immersed bearing was lignum vitae.

It used to be used in a similar way in a ships stern tube.

Job is done, it was a pain! used the space outside lower garage, its a bit flatter there. Jack on the rear offside point, some fence post blocks under the wheel. As the front also came off the ground and I had a spare screw jack, I put that on the front sill point too.

Axle stand at the rear likely good enough if it fell.

Axle stand too tall to go under the front frame so it went there. Blocks were a bit too tall for the front wheel.

I now appreciate that a stand with a threaded screw adjustment, if they exist, would be quite beneficial.
