AWS Numbering System - Found this handy chart

On my course, this along with a lot of other information was given to me, i will certainly try to remember it all! but this chart helps a lot with us less experienced ones when it comes to reading electrode codes.

Hope you can see it clearly. Its a page from a book from lincoln electric that gives all information on which rods to use for which job, method, drag, dig etc. Very informative!

Oh, i thought the 80XX spec was just given as an example. Those are used for high temperature >600oC applications aren't they?

It depends, that spec covers compositions that can work in temps from sub zero (the Ni bearing) to high temp (CrMo)

The 80XX is just the tensile strength 80000 psi (the yanks are still on flintstones units). Its the suffix that determines the application . The -B1, B2 etc are CrMo, the C1, c3 etc are Ni bearing for low temps and the Ds are MnMo for strength

The 6010 they mention at the top of the page is Mild Steel which isnt covered by that spec so why have they mentioned it........doesnt make sense........I hope the rest is accurate

The americans are still measuring in old money, the amount of videos of them welding and are talking '1/8 inch rod or 5/16ths or 1/4 inch root pass...gets a little confusing when they start talking in 32's of inch They need to get with the times!

its a pain in the **** having to work both metric and imperial, and switch between and convert between the two all the time!

although to be fair, in agriculture, a lot of things are still imperial even from new these days. sometimes there just aint a metric equivalent!

Im working with guys who flit between the two. They may as well be talking Portuguese.

Im metric if its small (mm rather than inches) and imperial if its big (miles), in between its OK cos a metre and a yard are just about the same (unless theres a lot of them)

I've noticed that, sometimes you just can't help but use imperial, just to cut out the decimals confusion I remember working with PVC pipe a few years ago, all made by ametek or sears, all U.S. made, all imperial. (Solvent weld, swimming pool piping) 1/2, 3/4, 1'', 1-1/2'', etc..

The amount of customers who used to come and with their own fittings to try and get some pipe matched up, couldn't seem to click, why we only had imperial fittings..


Apart from the fact that metric and imperial fittings aren't compatbile, imperial used to measure the out to outside edge of the pipe, whilst the metric measure inside edge to edge diameter.

it when they start with 3ft 40mm! i have just finished outfitting my camper van conversion and most of that was done in imperial as most of the measurements made most sense in imperial!

Cars are one of those things, sump plug in imperial, spark plugs metric etc..or to make things more of a pain, 3 out of 4 bolts holding something on are once size, whilst the other isn't.. Who'd of thought you'd need two different sized battery cable clamp bolts? Renault did....every other car is 10mm, renault is an 8mm, and the other either a 8.5mm ,(yes really!) or a 9mm
