Avoiding Using Solicitors as Executors

One of the things that's come as a shock recently is realising that a lot (all?) of my friends are older than me. They've been dropping like flies.

I have a Will in place and have swopped and changed on the question of who will be my Executor, the problem being that I have no kids.

In situations like these, I just know that solicitors will be totally uncontrolled in what they take as Executors.

Any advice appreciated.

Any one can be the executor, their role legally speaking is to make sure your wishes are followed. They can use a solicitor to-get probate, but its the executor who is legally accountable to divi up as per your will.

Any one can get valuations etc and supply info to solicitor to get probate.

Well, here's part of the problem - I'm a Yorkshireman and I hate spending money!!!
I'm driving around in two cars whose total age is 42 years. I am a tight fisted old git who grew up in a cardboard box on the outskirts of Leeds.

Anyway, most of what I'm worth is in the house, which I guess is true of many of us.
If anyone is in any doubt, I'm now more convinced than ever before that solicitors are total crooks.

If you have no immediate family you want to leave it to could you leave it all to a preferred good cause and allow them to be an executor?

Any close family friends, relatives?, one of my aunts was in a similar situation and my sister agreed to be executor so my aunt gave her 5% of her estate for doing it.

I'm leaving some money to a charity; looking at the possibility that one of their staff could do it.

I appreciate the jokes, but this is serious stuff guys. It's about keeping money from going to solicitors, something we should all be trying to do.

They told me they had a client who wanted her ashes sent back to South Africa where she was born. So the Solictors sent one of their staff by air to deliver the ashes; TRUE!

how about sponser a child

by that i mean walk into a care home have a word with staff and be specific explain that you would like to sponser a child who has no one no family and no one to look after them they are there
set an arrangement for 4-6 children 3 girls and 3 boys who you would like to gift them something for a good start in life or as a special treat and lock it down until a certain age

sounds silly but id do it if i hadnt got children think of it this way your gift would light up there life and you might have your name used for your gift

at least no money grabbing solicitors or the gov or even worse the charitys that spend 80 percent of the value on themselves it will go where you wished it to go

I'd say that's reasonable considering what the result of the ashes being lost by a courier would be.

When I was getting divorced nigh on 20-years-ago, I surprised my (female) Solicitor at our first meeting to discuss.
I stated I wanted no "tennis" games of inciting letters back and forth, with no correspondence sent I hadn't explicitly sanctioned.
I then asked for what my best settlement options were, that would be equitable and acceptable to a Judge, that I could present to the (ex) wife.
I said "no offence, but I'd rather my ex got the settlement instead of blowing a wad giving it to you!"

(It worked, and my Divorce solicitor costs were pretty low).
