I've recently picked up a 21 plate Mazda 3 to replace the 05 one that rotted too much to save.
I really dread having to get another car in the future. The trend of automatic Wa**panzers has pretty much made it a mono market. Combined with regs that want to break the laws of both physics and thermodynamics without including manufacturing emissions makes for a bleak future.

The 2.8TDi was probably the best Frontera, engine was bomb proof and fuel pump could be tweaked. I had a couple and regret selling the last one however they weren't exactly standardYeah but bullet proof Isuzu 2,8TD engine with mechanical pump

I'd love another one to modify, only problem is I dismantled my Frontera toy and sold off all off road stuff and I probably wouldn't be able to buy most of it again. Took me 18 months to find a rear Trooper axle with an open diff carrier so I could fit a lockerI might have also acquired a 2.8TD Frontera

I prefer older cars, less to go wrong and easier to fix most are 1950s to 1980s, we have a 2010 Skado Vrs estate as a modern run about but the dashboard lights up like a fruit machine at times

I had an '86 Renault 25GTX (the 2.2L) in '93 and the electronic dash went haywire (no speedo, random lights etc.). After failing miserably to claim against the so-called 'warranty' I rang the local Renault dealers where one of the techs advised taking the instrument cluster out and resoldering the back of the circuit board. He was right; fixed the fault and it never went wrong again while I had it.
Potentially a common issue with Renault electronics of that era?
...and my car is 38 next month (first registered '87)... I'll have owned it for 25 years in about a fortnight

1933 BSA 10hp saloon, slumbering peacefully in the garage, waiting for me to get retired and continue its restoration.
(After an ever growing list of "Once your retired..." )

I’m still driving around in a 2006 Mitsubishi Shogun. MPG is shocking, road tax top bracket, insurance fairly cheap, reliability is excellent but likes to rust. Do I want to change it, yes. Is there anything I can find to replace it, no.
Everything modern I’ve driven recently is so damn boring or packed with technology that it's off putting to drive, see the whinge about the Merc GLB hire car I had.
I’ve not even brought in the costs. Whilst my fuel and road tax costs are high it’s a lot less the depreciation of a newer car and mine barely suffers from depreciation now. Servicing costs on new cars are expensive where as mine is around £200 a year average including full fluid changes every 3 years. Then there is insurance on newer cars with such high book values and I all need worry about is incase some moron runs into me and causes enough damage to write mine off with the 50% value rule or whatever it is.
I can drive mine down the crappiest of roads without fear of breaking anything and park it anywhere as there is enough scratches on it that people think twice about parking next to me.

I kind of agree, older cars are a lot better, easier to maintain, just as reliable if you keep them serviced, but much more budget friendly.
I run a 2004 Audi A4 Avant, with the legendary 1.9tdi pompe Duse engine, as fitted to Noah’s Ark and everything since. Rust free being a Spanish car and relatively simple to service.
The wife has a 2007 Audi A6 Allroad with the 2.7 V6 tdi which is one of the better V6 diesels but the whole car is way harder to service than my A4.
I think (for me) it can be older, but must have air conditioning to cope with the climate here. I’d love an Audi RS2 Avant but prices have gone crazy. Originally designed by Porsche for Audi, a proper performance family load lugger with its quattro driveline and the same engine as THE Quattro. When the boys were buying Sapphire Cosworths with their 220 ish BHP, this thing was over 300, in a practical family estate car.
I went to look at an Audi S4 Avant the other week, but my issue with that is servicing and repairs. Cam phasers, chains, even to re-gasket the engine (needed) is an engine out job. This one had the 4.2 V8, but even the earlier ones with the V6 turbo engine are the same. In the same garage they had a 207 Audi S6 Avant, in wonderful condition and low KMs, but that has the V10 which is even more scary.
I did like the last of the Sierra Sapphires with 4x4 and air conditioning, leather etc. None left over here. I also really liked the last of the Series 3 Jags, but the same thing applies. Find a good one.
I’ve given up on a Rover P6 now. None in LHD with aircon unless it comes from the USA. And importing one to Spain as a classic car is nigh on impossible.
Another local garage has a Lancia Delta Integrale for sale, lovely car in red. But €55,000? Like really? He also has a Fiat 124 drop top with the 1600 twin cam in it. Needs cosmetic work but it’s a runner. €17,000. Mental.
So my beloved A4 stays. Probably for ever. Poverty spec and old, but it’s the one which brought us to Spain so it has a special place in my heart. And that engine should easily do another 300k kms. Not so sure about the junky CVT transmission though.
