Automotive oscilloscope recommendations?

@JOEPRO I bought one of these because for its price it's basically an improved multimeter. I wouldn't trust it on high speed stuff but it's been handy checking crank sensors etc., down in the workshop so I don't have to bring the £5k Keysight one down from the office and risk knocking it over. If it's as you say just an extra tool for checking basic things then it's so cheap it's worth it. When you get into the higher speed CAN stuff then you really want something much more capable.

Yes I suppose in terms of my Mercedes and having the Star software means a scope is not strictly necessary.

Trust me, it is - there's a M-B 'scope module that connects to Xentry but it's not as useful IMO as a standalone. Most problems with the CAN concentrator strips are down to corrosion, open them up and look at the back of the PCB, there's usually at least a couple of the soldered joints changing colour. Xentry will tell you via a DTC there is a 'missing message' but won't tell you why, using a scope you can 'see' why. Also bear in mind that it is a two-way communication channel, sometimes you need to disconnect a node from the CAN and then check if it's still 'talking', even when disconnected, all modules - especially on a LIN, will be quite chatty, as in life, it's the quiet ones you need to worry about.
