it was in the early days of synthetics, but the syn now IS more stable BUT has more carbon thrown at it from all ends now, with more and more hi pressure turbos and with turbos turboing turbos, on one inlet tract etc exhaust manifold pressure at 40 psi or more then DPF regens throwing fuel around, like it grew in the ground !

Completely agree though, service intervals based on a set mileage are silly anyway. With the on board computer capabilities of even 10yr old cars, the service interval ought to be dynamic, based on things like time driven while not up to temp and number of startups.

exactly In my mind it is just better to drop the oil and get shut of the carbon etc, and have some nice clean thin, quick to be pumped and move around the engine, fuel free oil. For what it costs it is folly to leave it in, IMO
20K is stupid how many regen's and more important failed regens is that?

Pretty sure BMW do with their current CBS [Condition Based Servicing] - I think mine is too old to have it, just a mileage/time 'counter'.

Even though as said above the problem is we dont know how many regens or failed regens an engine has endured and how much fuel contamination has taken place. IMO too many variables get shut and reduce poss issues it's cost effective.

Dont know how far they got with this, other truck manufacturers have been playing with drip feeding new oil in from a separate tank while removing old and introducing that into the combustion process. Was reading about this attempt to negate the down time of a service/oil change and some of the follow up comments, one knob asked how they would pay the fuel duty on the engine oil burned . Beggars belief that a mind can think like this when you consider the tens of thousands of pounds a truck company coughs up in duty on an annual basis.

old Scanias in the 70/80s had the best filter system a centrifuge for main oil and a separate spin on filter on the turbo no idea if they use that system now.
also used to be a add on system that took oil from pressure pipe to round container on the chassis had some kind of filter in it you used to send oil off to the lab for analyse it to see if it needed changing

My BIL used to work for a Nation bus Co. Diff oil was changed every 50k, Shell approach them with an oil they had developed, said it only required changes every 250k, thus saving many hrs down time.

They knew the mpg to .1 for all the fleet, [the monitoring would flag driver changes ie holidays) He chose 2 vehicles for the test, on long haul London-Edinburgh, the other a set route with a good driver. He also did oil tests. MGP increased immediately, with no adverse wear. I cant remember the figures, <1mpg, doesn’t sound much, but on a bus doing millions of miles over it lifetime thats a lot of money.

I rebuilt my defender axles and transfer box with it. Was noticeably quieter.
I wasn’t bothered about mpg
