Automotive Compresor convert

Hey guys,

Im just wondering if anybody has or knows how to convert an automotive air
conditioner unit (belt driven) to an air compressor. I know its been done i just need the how to on actually doing it. I also know they can be purchased for about $200US (i think) but id be more content making my own. will come in handy for air tools, air bag suspension and a pneumatic ram to lift the tray up on the back

You need a pre oiler and a good coalising filter.
electric pressure switch.

Cheers guys, just what im looking for.
if i end up doing this set up it will be going nowhere near off road, quite the opposite infact. I have a Holden 1 tonner, which you blokes would call a flat bed or something like that. and its been cleaned up pretty well, gets taken to a few show and shine events and ive been sussing out some air bag suspension for it and a new tray which may incorporate a pneumatic ram to lift it to gain acess to the underside of the vehicle.also not having to find a place to mount a proper FBSS aircompressor and aircon compressor mounts being quite common for my engine it seems the logical way. and i love tinckering and messing round with stuff.

What bags ect are you using?? (I use slams)

Im not using bags at the moment, but considering them. i know slam bags are the **** so i'll look into them.
Until i get bags it'd be primarily for air tools and lifting the tray up. i had a look at the local self serve wreckers and found quiet a few compressors but most of them are pretty worse for wear so i'll see if i can source a newer secondhand unit for cheap.
What makes it better is that we deal with a pneumatics company thru work so i can get all the oilers, filters, tanks and fittings quite easily.

Ive just been thinking, i could use an external transmission oil cooler as an intercooler for the compressed air. in Lukes link they used a coil of tube from a larger compressor but i think a transmission cooler should be able to handle cooling the compressed air

nice truck. Is it new or re-built?

I also note the 'P' plate, is that for a newly licenced driver? We can use them here in the UK but it's not compulsory (as far as I know).

The oil-cooler sounds like a good idea. Are you thinking of putting it across the front of the sub-frame like a power-steering cooler?

its 10:20pm monday night here

Its been re-built, defiantly not new. made in 1981. dont make em like this any more, sadly enough.

The P plate (which is exactly what they're called) is "probationary"
You sit a theory test to get your L plates (learners) and then have to do 50hrs (40hrs of day and 10hrs of night) driving with someone thats had their full licence for more than 2 yrs. after the 50hrs you do a practical test with an examiner, and when you pass you get your P plates. and after you've been on your P plates for 18+ months you get your full licence. Also when your on your probationaries u MUST display the p plates or else its a hefty fine and back to your learners

yea the oil cooler would be mounted up under the front guard or in front of the radiator for maximum air flow ( but most of the compressor work would take place while the car is stationary)

a thermo fan would be a good addition for the cooler aswel ay? just a thought
i seen really small ones for the aircon coolers on smaller cars.

Air con cooler would be better,
If you use a York 210 they have there own oil sump and out perform any rotary type comp.

I wouldn't worry about cooling fan as the viscous fan will be more than capable.

thanks for that link migmag, i only looked on the Australian Ebay and there were only a couple of ones on there.

I converted the starting price and postage (to UK only) and it worked out to about $100 Aussie dollars.Mightnt sound much but being an apprentice thats 1/3 of my wage gone. so i might find something a tad bit closer to home. i take it these "YORK" compressors would have been fitted to Land rovers etc. might have to trawl through the specialty wreckers and get one cheap. otherwise i'll make do with a standard compressor which makes finding mounts here a hell of a lot easier and i'll make do with an extra oiler upstream from the compressor. either way. i'll keep you guys updated.

Regarding the licenceing, its just a safe guard to make sure people behind the wheel know what they are doing and are capable of being incontrol of a car and can do basic manovours like paralell parking, mirrors and all of the small things needed in day to day driving. if i simplify the process it sounds less complicated (go figure )

50hrs driving with someone that has their full licence
Practical Test
Probationaries (P plates)
18+ months ( i think)
Full licence

Hi,

it's been a while since I was involved with learning/learners (my kids a few years ago) but I think in the UK we do a theory test, get a provisional licence, have a few lessons...

anything from two or three up to 30+ depending on competence. Then take the test and get a full licence. 'P' plates are optional to warn other drivers that the 'new' driver may do odd-ball things if he/she gets flustered.

Here we even give full licences to immigrant who maybe don't even speak English on the strength of their 'home-country' licence.

A guy I know worked out of Florida for a while on a cruise ship so he took the American driving test and got a licence...but they got it wrong and gave him a licence for heavy goods trucks.

When he got back to the UK he applied for and got a licence to drive pretty much anything even though he's never had a lesson on big trucks (not that he drives them, but he could).

Going by what me old mans told me bout back in the day, thats how it used to be over here, theory, learners, test then full licence.

While on the learners its a good idea to do lessons as theyre done by people qualified to teach driving and you dont pick up the bad habbits, from people such as parents as 9 times out of 10 they're the person that has their full licence and has to accompany you while driving on a learners permit.

Lucky for me, an old mate of my dads is a qualified instructor so i got all my lessons for free, might grab him a 6pack when im old enough to get booze

anyway, back on topic. once i've finished skool. i'll be doing my apprenticeship full time and have a steady stream of money coming in so i can complet all my projects
