Automated gates

We have a single leaf farm gate i'm looking to automate - so one half of what is shown in the diagram.
The problem i have is becuase of the shape of our drive, the safety photocell - number 6 - which is on the left/bottom would be stuck right in the middle of my drive. Is there another way round this?

Mine doesn’t have those two posts, it has a mat covering all that area burried underground to detect anything in the way. Could work for you if that’s what they are there for.

Could you do away with photocells and have a edge detection strip on the gate and a vehicle detection loop in the ground.

Depends if it’s a diy job and your not bothered about it meeting the regs. Gates are classed as a machine and should have certain safety mechanisms to prevent trapping and crushing etc. Went through it when I had my instaltion designed.

That is how they are activated. The photocells are there to make sure the gate doesn't close on a car etc.

It is my own house, but there are little kids around. Rather the gate didn't hit them or a car etc.
I'd rather do it right.

The guarding and control of gates is a complexed case to meet all the current safety reg's, just doing my first set next week.

I've seen them and thought that the one opposite was just a reflector to send the beam back, but had no wiring, I may well be wrong on this tho. get expert advice

Might be worth getting a quote from a gate installer they would talk you through how they would do it in some detail, you don’t have to take them up on the offer.

When mine was done they also did trapping force stop tests to simulate kids and fingers. The whole “machine” is then ce approved I had to be on site for training and handover and got a thick custom manual for my gates with bespoke operating and safety instructions. Made me realise what goes into the cost of a pro install.

We have a similar system on the yard gates. The two photo cells on the gate post are just to stop the gates closing on someone or a car if they are still there when the timer closes them , the ones on small posts before the gates are to open the gates from the inside when a vehicle needs to leave the property, so no gate entry zapper is needed to exit. This can also be activated with a twisted pair ( ground loop) instead cut into the road and pitched in so no posts or cells needed. This ground loop is not pressure activated its magnetism triggered from the steel/iron in a car, thats the system we use.

Post 6 doesn't have to be there , on mine the gate slides and the posts are 15m apart. ( if that helps)

Best thing is consult a specialist, this is what I do (the risks are massive ) . Might you not be better off with a double roller (I don't know the wall detail obviously ). My specialist has all the legals drawn up properly and a lot of past experience so I tend to just sub this work

If I'm reading the issue correctly, no six doesn't have to be in that position, you can move it back to the perimeter of your drive. As long as the ir transmitter and receiver are correctly aimed at each other you can increase the distance quite a way. I've done one where the ir transmitter was in a hedge across the garden because he didn't want a post on the edge of lawn/drive.

We have IR beams covering gateways that are 50 Mtrs with hedge they cover, same as @bletchmonster the Tx & reflectors are in hedges so as not to be too prominent
