Auto driveshaft shortened.

A guy needed 6" cut off for a V-8 Vega project.
The first pic i removed the u joint, chucked it in my lathe and center drilled the yoke. Then i turned off the old weld, 3 wacks with a hammer until the yoke came out. Then put it on my welding fixture and tapped the yoke back in. Tacked the top and measured the holes and made the other side the same. Then ran a bead around it and done. This one makes #104 since i have been doing them in 1977...Bob

I 've done that too, but not for a car. So also interested about the balance. Vibrations were not a problem on the one I did (low RPM)

ive shortened a few atlas single props . all i did was fitted it to the vehicle jacked the back wheels of the car and run it up 2 max revs one was perfect the other vibrated between 30 and 40 mph all i did was used a dial gauge and measured the run out and taped a 1inch x1inch x1/16th of an inch piece of plate to one side and re ran it it counteracted the runout and i welded it on .balance at all revs was perfect with no vibration

Yup thats how i do them too, If its short you can sometimes get away without balancing them, although balancing isn't that dear really.

Yeah when shortening i reckon you can get away without a rebalance, not so sure about a retube though, I prefer to get them balanced.
