are they good to use, or is it better to use the ol' flip down, i definatley do not want to become dependent on the auto one, though i can use the old ones fine.
Much easier to use as you can see before the arc and position the rod.
I did some welding in the dark corner of my garage last week. Had a hard time starting the arc in the right place. By the time I flipped the mask down, I had moved the rod.
It was an autodarkening helmet but was jut too dark to see and I was too lazy to get the work light
The other thing is they have an adjustable shade. Makes it easier to see the arc in either low or high current welding.
You're already depending on it....if you've worn it once, then it'll be no better or worse any time in the future...
When I bought mine, the guy (at KMS - you'd recognise them!) told me to put it in front of a light to charge it up before first use, and otherwise, there's no reason to suspect it'll fail. I put mine in the sun if I haven't used it for a while, but I doubt it matters that much.
I do know how you feel though - somehow it just feels that the technology just can't work that well, but it does!
there well worth the investment for 'tacking up' what ever your welding, but if i doing straight runs i use a flip down helmet as the replacement screens for them are only pennies unlike pounds for the auto darkening cover screens.
