Auto Darkening Helmet - Opinions Needed on these

The first is a no-name too-cheap most likely pile of rubbish.

The second is fixed shade.

Why not by a Parweld (known brand) variable shade helmet from Weldequip for 50-something quid?

At the end of the day, what price do you put on your eyes? they're what matter.

That helmet is an OAP drawing its pension by helmet standards, contact weldequip and invest 50 quid in a new one....

Having treated quite a few patients with arc eye, I would never ever use a secondhand mask, no way of knowing if there is a problem with it or if it will pack up suddenly. I got mine from weldequip for about the aforementioned £50 - sifbronze is the brand I think, and it works fine. However I am thinking about buying another better one as well - you only have one set of eyes, and they are worth looking after.

Same goes for your ears when doing noisy stuff like grinding.

That Speedglas helmet is nearly as old as me, all forum members get a free packet of front cover lens when they buy a parweld from DIY Welding

That is quite the oldest Speedglas I've ever seen. I wonder if parts are still available for it?

That being said, Speedglas -- and my Speedglas was second hand -- will outlast any of the solar units by a factor of 3 or 4.

Is this why you are getting another helmet one for each ear

Nah I just use a big pair of ear defenders for them. Extra mask is so I've got one for each eye

Actually another helmet is more bacause my current one has been bashed about a bit some impact damage etc, it works fine and probably will for a long time to come, but as I say - eyes are important!

Sound advice from drjim. But even if the auto darken function fails the harmful UV and IR are still filtered out. They only let the visable light through if the auto feature fails.
