Given the situation you didn't have much alternative.
If it becomes a regular thing you would probably need to look at getting something that can model properly because you will be wasting a load of time in acad.

any suggestions on decent programs. I tried solidworks but got even less done on that
Yeah it's a problem jumping from one software that has certain fundamental ways of doing something and picking up another that works in a totally different way.
Maybe pick one of the autodesk products like inventor? May have a similar way of thinking to acad (have a feeling it probably doesn't though).

I am currently playing with autodesk inventor fusion. it is similar in some ways to autocad but will take a bit of getting used to, and for some reason is really slow on my laptop compared to autocad.

seems to do wht I want a bit better, just need to get used to doing different things to get the same outcome, inventor makes it simpler to do a lot of tasks though

i have 6gb ram and about 1tb free hard drive space, it runs anything else fine, just not inventor

right, have had a play with inventor fusion, it seems to do the majority of what I need, and once modelled, I can import to autocad, put it all into view ports and annotate it then print as I want it.
however, I cannot figure out how to make threads. as I am aware, in the standard inventor package, there is a thread tool that allows you to choose pitch, thread angle etc, in fusion it doesn't exist, and to make life harder the helix tool as used in acad doesn't exist either. in acad I just draw a helic that matches the pitch and dia of the thread then sweep a thread profile around it. I cant see any way of doing it in fusion, which is a shame as when I make models of things they usually have threads in them. for instance, I would want to use inventor to mock up an adjustment bracket using an M8 thread as the adjuster, fusion would be good for this as it shows any damage that would be caused, and show if anything would bind up etc, but I cannot see a way to make the threads

Solidworks and similar packages have one huge benefit when it comes to making changes.
Parametrics allow the user to make drastic changes quickly that would require a Total redraw on 2D Packages.
For instance I was designing a POS display today and the customer rang to say that they wanted to increase the thickness of metal throughout the job from 2mm to 3mm.......
It was literally a 2 Minute change with all the drawings updating automatically

You don't have to really make the threads in detailing or modelling. For holes you need the tapping hole size and for shafts you make it the 8mm for m8. When detailing for the hole you add outlines for the outer hole and for shafts to show thread.
I'm on holiday at the minute but when I'm back I can upload the images.

but that wont help with what I want to do. in inventor fusion, once you have made an assembly you can operate that assembly as it would be operated in reality, and then it will show you any areas where there will be interference. without the threads on the shaft/in the hole it will not operate
That's normal mate. You need to remember for cam you need only the tapping hole anything else is a pain in the rear and the programmer won't thank you for it one bit.
Solidworks has the hole wizard which has all the threads in - all it does is show a visual representation of the thread while in actual fact all that is really there is the tapping hole. When I output step/parasolid/iges to the cam people they can't even see the visual representation but only the tapping hole which is exactly what they want.
