Needs a water pump, any idea how much, its had a pressure test.

Depends on the exact car but if you have to take the timing belt off to get to the pump then a gates kit with belt/tensioners/pump is about £140.
Although I did a timing belt on an a3 a while ago and skipped the water pump as it was nearly £200 alone.

normally those pumps are good for 200,000miles.....
I only change em because of the timing belt service time/mileage.....poss some no make part used in the past.....

An OEM pump I would guess about £40-50 but don't underestimate the installation time...this timing belt change on an A8 should have taken 2days ended up more like 2weeks due to sheared water pump bolt...
What can also happen is when the cambelt has been changed the extra tension will affect the water pump if it was replaced at the same time. The amount of labour to change the water pump is a little bit more than changing the belt which is why it's so common to replace it at the same time

...and also a good idea to change the thermostat at the same time if it's tucked away behind the belt.

I thought Schaeffler offered these?
Dunno but personal preference.
(Through dealer is like a few quid anyways and then got decent fall back)

Is there much involved removing this waterpump, it's my lads car not mine not really had a chance to inspect it, can't find much on YouTube, it's in the garage now, there saying there's a bit of work and he's looking at 3-4 hundred.

Have you checked the price of the pump yourself?
Could be anything from £20 to £320 so the price they have given might be anything from a bargain to a complete rip-off.

Price is £37 for a SKF up to £140 for a genuine one.
Loads of options inbetween.
Timing chain on that car but there is a separate belt driving the pump (£32 gen)
Also new coolant (£25)

£300-400 is not ridiculous. Maybe they mean £300 if it all goes smoothly or £400 if some of the bolts need drilling out...

He did say oem parts.. It went in sat morning, my lad talked to him, so I'm getting it all second hand.
Said there was a bit of work to get at it

New ish car so the bolts should all come undone but they will know that if a water pump has been leaking there is also a decent chance of every one of them being stuck rotten.
I think i would be quoting around the same sort of price. Especially as it sounds like some sort of repair job not a service so I would be concerned about the possibility of finding more problems
