Audi A1 Abs Fault

Well since changing the front drop links, I've now got an Intermittent ABS fault.

I can only think the hammering action of the impact gun on the wheel nuts or the Drop links has shaken the ABS sensors. I did notice one of the very thin brake shields was a bit twisted, but thought no more of it.

Anyone have any experience with these?

What sort of diagnostics does a mechanic need to rectify this fault? MOT this week so couldn't come at a worse time.

Actual warning message is;

"Stabilisation and ABS fault. See owners manual"

Or something along those lines.

All pads have plenty of meat left on them.

Actually misses did kerb her wheel pretty hard the other day too.

Would something like a snap on solus work or does it need someone with VAGCOM?

Needs a plug in to prove what the fault is and where it is coming from.

It may not be a wheel sensor - or the wheel you were working on. Might be something else.

VCDS plug in - cluster and read error codes. If it is a wheel speed sensor - you are then into roadtesting on live data - to see if sensor reads at all (if it does not it - is the sensor/wiring/abs pump). If it does read - but drops - it is the airgap between sensor and what sensor reads - metal debris or the mag' pick up the wheel bearing.

From memory these early Audi A1's have Gen series bearings inc wheel hub carrier - some pressed in with special tool - some bolted in for later ones (easier job).

Not a fan of SnapOn diagnostic gear - but as long as the Solus is updated enough and capable of CAN diagnostics (cluster). You should work it from the protocol - easily enough...

Any diagnostic that can interrogate the abs system should do. If you get a circuit fault then the control unit is seeing an open circuit or resistance through the sensor that's outside tolerance, that could be a dodgy sensor or a fault with the wiring, these cars are prone to breaking wires between the body and hub.
If you see a plausibility fault then the electrical circuit is ok but the waveform is outside tolerance, could be contamination on the end of the sensor or on the trigger ring.

Check you haven't knocked the sensor while hammering away and give the abs ring a blast with some air in case you've knocked some **** into it. You can measure the sensors with a multimeter but need to know what type they are. Passive or active I think are the different types. After doing the basics you need an obd code reader to find what area the fault is in.

I had warning lights for abs, traction control, 4x4 system etc in my old Outlander and it turn out to be the bloody fuel pressure regulator valve!

I had a split abs ring on my Peugeot, it happened twice actually, the ring corrodes and breaks making one of the tooth gaps bigger than the rest which then throws up an ABS fault, only about a tenner to buy but you have a bit of dismantling to change them.

Have noticed German cars have very fragile wheel and brake sensors..replaced the pads on a 2016 Mini One a week ago and it came in with no codes but put the car back on the ground and could not re-set the brake service light after disturbing the front and rear sensors, fixed with a new pair from Europarts ..same thing happened when i owned my 535D too.

Always fit new wear sensors on Mini’s and most otheir modern cars . Not worth the hassle of trying(and failing) to save a few Bob using the old ones

Probably not relevant here....but check that the hub nuts/bolts are not loose...had that one on a Volvo once...the shaft was moving just enough to trip the ABS warning.

I torqued them to 120nm as per manual but yes I will check

My Launch will read it and probably give live data, live data will show what is actually happening at te wheels, when are you around with the car?

Oh and do you have any alloy chequer plate off cuts?

I only asked about driving the car as sometimes the abs codes stay on even after replacement of parts until the wheels are rotated up to trigger speed at which if fixed it will clear and if not it will stay illuminated.
