If they're running at 'full capacity' as you claim, then someone sized them wrong. Fact.

Ok, you've just blown your credibility.

In normal operation, a rotary screw compressor (a) starts (in Star Delta)' runs offload for a short period, before the inlet valve opens and it 'makes air' or compresses until the upper limit of the working pressure is achieved. It then shuts the inlet valve and runs 'off load' in a vaccum. The motor is turning, the air end is rotating, but no air is being compressed. At this point around 20% of the electric motors rated power is being consumed. If the lower pressure setting is not reached within a certain period of time (dependant on the control method, and operating mode selected if a modern micro processor controlled machine) then the motor stops, until the lower pressure setting is reached, and then bingo, back to (a).

The compressed air is then fed either to a dryer (possibly inbuilt) or to a (wet) receiver. This will be either a Vertical or Horizontal Air Reciver. This is what you called a 'tank', more commonly used by the British Army and aquarium enthusiasts.

Then we could talk about filtration, pressure dew points, desiccant dryers, air quality standards to ISO 8573.1 2001, control methods, point of use filtration/regulator-lubricators, and the list goes on.

If you want to talk about condensate management, oil/water separators, and drains, we also have lots of fun things to discuss. Or you could just keep lecturing me with your 'knowledge'...

P.s piston compressors are not used in modern industrial settings, apart from the odd dinosaur.

I was going to stay out of this as I don't claim to know about compressors and you seem to have an answer to everything, but come on, "noobs"? Seriously? Grow up, 10 year olds on scooters call each other noobs.

This I try to do, I'm civil to all (I think) but when wrongly challenged or rounded on, for petty things such as use of words that they don't deem to be 'the Queens English' I tend to fight my corner.

There's a ring hanging on the crank that runs in the oil sump - as the crank turns the ring turns with it, picking up oil. The ends of the crank are shaped such that the oil is thrown outward, where it is caught on a lip and channelled into a gallery drilled into the crank web. This gallery feeds the big end bearings and also another gallery in the con rod to supply the little ends.

That is still a type of pressure system used by broom wade, and others, in the smaller ac series pumps as apposed to the ac41 which did have a pump , as roller brgs dont need pressure feed the oil enters the crank and is then thrown outwards by the crank, through centrifugal force and gains pressure, so in effect the big ends are pressure fed but without the losses of an actual pump, the crank 'causes' the pumping effect.
Still a very reliable system of lube but the oil needs to be thin enough to make the trip.

PS My view is Maker is very grown up in his knowledge and outlook for his 15yrs

Also, it has big end shell bearings, not ball or roller.

Yes sorry I meant to say that the main brgs are rollers and dont need a pressure feed but the big ends are white metal and are better suited to a pressure fed system. After all you cant create a pressure in an unsealed roller or ball brg.

People were inventive in the 50's.

The loose ring method has been in use since a lot earlier than the 50's. My old lineshaft drill uses that lubrication method for the driveshaft. Recently saw a photo of the setup you describe on an American compressor unit too.
