Asus TP550L laptop screen flickering.

Ive had the above laptop for nearly 3 years & its mainly used on its mains connection. I had to use it on batteries the other day & the screen began flickering so badly it was almost unreadable.
Plenty of info on the net & Youtube about screen flicker on Asus computers, mainly concentrating on the ribbon cable between the computer & the screen going faulty.
Problem is my laptop screen has been in much the same position & is rarely moved, wouldn't have thought the ribbon cable would to have much chance to get damaged.Additionally if you plug the mains lead back in the flicker disappears completely, even when I rotate the screen.
I'm coming round to the opinion that the battery may be the problem, is 3 years long enough for the battery to go faulty? or could something else be amiss.

Quite easily
Lithium Ion batteries do not respond well to be held fully charged or fully flat...

Some of the Dells I've had, have had a battery saver feature in the BIOS, where it will generally hold the battery at <80% and periodically wear the battery down, full charge it and then let it come back to down just below 80%

Heat of the laptop can also cook the battery

Have you ever blown the vents out? I did mine a while back and there was a serious amount of fluff hidden in places the vacuum couldn't suck out

Sage advice, just been looking on a website for a replacement battery. There on the website they quote the battery life limited to between 500 & 1000 charging cycles, additionally they warn against leaving it plugged in the mains to avoid overcharging, they even suggest removing the battery once fully charged for extended periods on mains. Not sure how I would do that as the Asus battery is inside the case & not easily removable unlike previous Dell models I have owned. Oh well, you live & learn, mainly through the pocket it would seem. Thanks again.
