I have an old PC thats been lying around a bit as |I upgraded a bit. I am trying to get it running again and whilst I saw a bios screen the first time it stated it wont show it again.

It wont even let me use F2 to accept default.

I have stripped it back to empty.. nothing attached.

Its been that long since I built |PC's I cant remember if it needs graphics card or memory to boot. It does not have a buzzer fitted so no post tones are being made at all......how do I move forward.

I was going to add clear the CMOS

STill not working it tries a few times but then gives up.

I am going to replace the thermal paste. whats the bes to use
COOLERMASTER High Performance Thermal Compound
or
Jetart CK4800 Nano Diamond Thermal Compound Paste

It goes through a lot it could be . it worked fine when I left it sitting for a few years..

Its looking more and more like the mother board has given up the ghost.

It could be power supply or cpu so i am going to test them if i can but i am looking a bit farther to see if i can get a local second hand motherboard if the worst pans out.

I am so out of date with specs could anyone put these in order of suitability/desireability.


I do have a spare ASUS P5PL2. Mother board here. It has no processor and i dont know if it works or how fast it is compared to the one i am trying to get working.


Sorry to ask but i am getting stressed as i only have till the 29th to get this sorted and i have to factor the weather in as well.

Have you tried replacing the CMOS battery, I know its a long shot but I once had a very old computer and the battery had gone and that stopped it from booting.
Another thing I would be tempted to try is the memory, I have come across some computers which will only boot with the memory in certain combinations/slots if you have taken the memory out I would try it in case I put it back in the wrong combination. The fact that it did boot suggests to me the memory itself was not the problem. I would also make sure a hard drive is connected and then try to boot.

99% of the time a board won't POST without memory and gfx installed.

I have seen capacitors fail on one old motherboard. Which stopped it booting. Occasionally it would attempt to boot but usually it wouldn't do anything. Only sign if failure was a couple of caps had bulged slightly

And older boards around that age could be a bit choosy about the ram it's got

Download the instructions and cheak over the board if you got the cmos reset in the wrong position it will not post pull any thing off the board usb socket And media brakeout extensions cheak in the instructions what slot 1 stick of ram goes in (this is normally the one closest to the cpu but not always) and then start it up with just one stick of ram in if not starting try another stick in the same slot

Edit forgot to add make sure all the power connections are done most boards need 2 connections

It looks like it might be going that way what sort of price. I just purchased another board and that wont post fully. Tried different power supply memory and graphics card and cpu now.

So i need to sort out methodically what does work and go from there...

I have to go and get a flue now but i found out the kids are on half term next week so not so rushed to get it all sorted for Sunday now.

Yep done all of that. The fact it boots to missing key board makes me think its Bios related.....

I thought that was the case but questioned myself. The new Abit starts to post but shows nothing on screen. It has a digital display but does not mean a lot to me but i am trying to baby sit and look after the wife at the same time.....its hard to concentrate.

Done all of that mate....i was sure it was board until i just purchased one and that still does not work properly.
