Wasn't sure what part to put this under as it's all welding types!

Quickish question, how do I get ASME IX? Chap I know said he would employ me ASAP if I was ASME IX (coded?) Sounds expensive..

His company does big oil pipes / valves. Now I know I'm a relative novice, but I'm picking things up fairly quickly. As someone said on here, 'Carbine clearly has the feel for it' so I'm hoping I can be good enough to get this dodgy American qualification/grade/something..

Fiorstly its not dodgy. You usually get the coding on the job so its a buit of a viscous circle. I would ask the same question on UKW there are guys on there doing this sort of tghing every day and they know all the rules. They will probably bite your head off but ignore that.

Sorry didn't mean dodgy as in poor or fake, I meant dodgy as in I don't know what it is. If it's like a qualification you get, or if its like certified work.

Here in Ireland the course is six months long and you get coded in all codes which are valid for two years. To gain entry to the course a welding competency test is required and the majority of participants are time served fitters or fabricators.

Carbine, you need to ask yer pipe man which Asme test/qualification you should do, unless he's suggesting you pass a simple 1G or somesuch, then he'll pay for the quals he needs you to have. There are many, and they apply to weld method, material, thickness, position, dadadee, dadada.

Six months.. wow that sounds hardcore. Well I'm used to full on learning, I'm currently a computer systems engineer and we need learn loads every sodding year, which is why I want out, it moves so quickly by the time you've learned it, its nearly time to be replaced! One of many reasons.. at least I can weld server racks back together when needed! :-p

I'm a bit wary of the UKW forum though, I get the impression they will shoot down the newbies. Even though my college tutor who works for Rolls Royce (aeronautical) says the MMA and MIG welds I have done so far, he would be happy to put under any test. I do know I have a LOT to learn though. 12 years ago I thought I wanted to be a mechanic, but the boss there kept denting my confidence as I think he knew I was quite able. As I was only 17, I let it get to me and gave up! Not this time around..

Drains, I should imagine (total educated guess) it would be 6G for pressure. The company does big oil and gas lines for saudi, USA etc mainly doing valves. That sounds very interesting to me! I have just e-mailed him though under your suggestion to find out which sub part he actually wants. I'm just a bit worried there will be a lot of red tape in order to pass!

So in essence, I 'think' I have the aptitude, and hopefully the hand to eye co-ordination needed! Better get some inconel rods! haha!

You can get coded in three days at a cost of around £1000.

You just need to make sure you are good enough before you pay your money.

Ahh that's brilliant Bingy, that helps loads. That picture helped! So I now understand that ASME 9 has different names to the British / EU way of doing things, but essentially the same processes. 6G looks very hard.. that's scared me a bit! I hope I will be able to do everything up to 4F / PD. They look hard..

Welding overhead.. sounds like a good way to lose your hair!
