asme 9? way to go?

First of hello to everyone
A bit of background, i have been coded to BSEN 287-1 and completed my city and guilds and have been MIG welding for over 7 years with some MMA now again.

Mostly worked on gates /railings and at the minute work on reinforcement cages for the precast concrete industry.

I really want to get a job doing some propper welding, hopefully structual work but with my C&G and coding have i cant seem to get a decent welding job to save my life think it might be my work experience doing crap welding jobs lol

I know ASME 9 is a good coding and i am thinkin of going back to the place that i got my BSEN 287-1 from to have a crack at it,so does anyone think it will help me or will my nill experience on big jobs still count me out

One last thing can ASME 9 be done with just MIG ???

ASME 9, is an MMA coding I think, theres an ASME coding think it might be P (EN 15614) that will cover MIG, and a flux cored option, I have heard rumblings that the latter is harder to pass out, as theres still a reluctance to use MIG on vessels (tho this could be urban mith)

It will however cost you some serious cash, 4 parts for a 6G qual........

Will it help you get a job??? maybe, it will show you can weld to a decent standard, but even with an ASME 9 in hand its likely you have to be retested before they would give you a job........

you might be better off trying to get a job in general fabrication, most shops are pretty varied and will be doing structures, alongside a fancy S/S balastrade.....

It dose cover all processes, materials and positions, But im with snowy in saying that the coding's are so job specific that you could end up wasting a hell of a lot of money unless you know what you'll be welding.
edit.. Sorry i wasn't too clear when i said it covers all processes etc , It does but are all separate tests!

nope nothings that simple with testing unfortuantly......

The main problem with the ASME code is that it treats all welding processes separately and imposes separate restrictions for each on both procedures and approvals. It is therefore prudent to check what the code says about the welding process you intend to use before you carry out any welding tests.

it is however less restrictive to the BS codings on the fact you can use it for things like hard face (Inconel valves and like)

But as you would imagine if you did all the processes it would cover 16 tests!!!!! wow£££££££

Snowy, ASME IX DOES cover all codes! Your quote proves absolutely nothing!

I'm not saying if you do an asme IX in MMA you're coded for anything else, just that ASME IX is the American classification under which codes of all types are taken.

So to the OP, you can code in MIG ASME IX, but that's all you'll be qualified in! - and that will be specific to material, size and position (within specific ranges)

wohhhh hold your horses Mr angry, I'm aware its all processes but your have to do the correct parts for the processes your want, was just saying an ASME 9, needs to be done to the standard you need, all the BS codeings are the simlar BTW.......

Oh well back to square one and welding runs on 20mm rebar
got to keep sharp ...... lol

might invest in a TIG machine and learn that.. i know im an ok welder with MIG and MMA so might be good to learn TIG now

What has ever happened to the days when you could walk through the factory gates looking for work, you say your a welder/can weld and get a test there and then! no code this and code that on some paper work, just go in and prove your competence, I worked for a company a few months back, out of us 8 welders only one was coded and that ran out for him, the quality of welding there was spot-on.
Bloody crap as far as i am concerned C&G, BS this and that grade.

Not trying to argue or anything, but in this county there is a massive untapped skilled workforce' because they have no paperwork they cant get the job/work, all because they haven't sat some exam.

Well i have to say what quals and the coding i have mean didly jack to every company ive approached,end of day ive only welded gates and reinforcement cages and thay assume i cant weld... must have bought my C&G and coding of the tinternet or my teachers were lying tellin me that these quals would be usefull, oh well
I ll continue to get on my workmates nerves with my endless welding of scrap rods and stuff to satisfy my need to do runs longer than 1 inch, they think im mad lol

You dont say what type of companies you are approaching, but unless you are looking for a production welding job then I suspect there are few that employ just welders, most companies really want experienced fabricators or sheet metal workers, who can read and work off engineering drawings and can weld to a good standard, if a contract requires a particular coding, then a suitable employee may be trained as required, or even bring in qualified contractors.
So it may well be your perceived lack of general fab experience is whats against you and not that your qualifications are worthless.
I have interviewed many qualified welders, who when shown round the workshop, didn't even know what a guillotine, or a profile cutter or a pressbrake etc. was, let alone use one, and in this economic climate nobody can afford learners, its the old catch 22, cant get a job without experience, cant get experience without a job.
Maybe going back to college and do a fabrication or sheet metal course would help you to get started.

I have no problem with reading and working of drawings i know how to use press brakes ,guillotines ,burning tackle etc.
C&G is a welding and fabrication course and teaches you how to use the majority of equipment and what it does, its a very good course for learning fabrication i found.
If there is one thing i would have loved to have got into it would be plate work i loved the pattern development stuff .The college i studied asked if i was intrested in doing an advanced course C&G with more complex pattern development but alas i was on 45 quid a week and the goverment training place would not pay for it

I wasn't suggesting that you didn't have the skills, it was just a general comment from my own experiences, The C&G Fab courses are pretty good, I used to teach some elements of them on a part time basis, Its getting that break to prove yourself thats difficult nowadays, as MetalJoiner says, you used to be able to walk in somewhere and do a trade test, and if you passed it, paper qualifications were irrelevant. trouble is there are so many people looking for work (at least so round here) now that companies have the pick of the most experienced, I don't employ anyone nowadays, but still get 2 or 3 applications a month from folk in exactly your position, keep plugging away, if your determined I'm sure you'll get there in the end.

Sorry to dig up an old post. I was looking into doing an asme 9 today. Now after reading this I just want to bang my head on the wall numerous times then hibernate for a few months and find an easy job pushing paper or something.

Its worth doing it if you have the contacts and you actually understand the job itself, without that start it something of a dead end. Unfortunately there are a lot of well qualified incompetents who have only done stuff at colleges, I know that is a chicken and egg situation. Its the same with most things Accountants, solicitors etc. My wife has the same basic qual as her Brother in law yet the difference in what she can and does do is far beyond his ability or experience. They are not too far different in age yet the wife chose her career path better and had more about her.
The big thing you will face if you take and pass such a coding is as and when a good job comes up (long or sort term) you will have to do a test for them most commonly and if your not practicing most days in the interim you will be far more likely to fail.
There are no easier jobs pushing paper BTW and the politics and protocols baffled me for years

Like you say if I pass an asme 9 and get a job chucked straight into the deep end I won't be able to do it due to lack of experience. I just need somthing to get me through the door and a company willing to show me the ropes.

I would aim a bit lower, if you turn up at a job with your freshly gained ASME 9 in your hand they will expect you to be able to do it all without any training. Are there any local engineering companies that would give you a trial period to see what you are capable of.

Please don't take my comments as being negative but it would be a shame for you to waste a lot of money on a qualification that may well be irrelevant for companies in your area's requirements, the other thing to remember is, I think unless you have documented evidence that you have been welding using the same material and process as is stipulated on your ASME cert during the last 6 months your certificate will become worthless

Like you say if I pass an asme 9 and get a job chucked straight into the deep end I won't be able to do it due to lack of experience. I just need somthing to get me through the door and a company willing to show me the ropes.

Sorry to burst your bubble but like I say you need the experience before you look for a job with this qualification or indeed any other. Partly its the system at fault but you wont change that take some smaller steps first and get some better work experience imo. Don't get sucked into how things work in the States the UK is a different place
