Armoured hose?

I'm looking at getting a couple of manifold cylinder pallets to sit in our steel shed outside and pipe in shielding gas via fixed pipe and then flexible hoses to save handling so many bottles.
As the machines are not always against a wall, column or convenient point, the hoses will end upon the floor. Leaks from hose damage could be difficult to find, and costly in lost gas. Are there any hoses similar to armoured cable that would no the job? Needs to remain flexible but resist impact damage/wear?

Anyone used MCP's? How do they cope with a number of welders working off the same one?

The flexible hose from our manifold pallet looked like a hydraulic hose, even had safety wires across the couplings.

How about some armoured brake hose as in the link below. problem is finding someone who can supply a reel.

Hi Paul,

Not sure if this would be any use to you, but you can get flexible conduit used in electrical work. Its the sort of stuff your shower hose is made out of. Its available up to 25mm Diam easily, and available plastic coated. Gland packs available to secure the ends. Just run your normal hose through the middle and then you have one armored hose. Its normally used for running individual 3 phase cables in for industry so should be made to a good enough standard.

Thanks all, looking at whats available, it might be an idea to use retractable air line reels set high up rather than it being yet another hose/lead trailing on the floor.

what about using retracts but dropping down from the roof not the walls depends on what part of the shop they are most needed less damage that way

You could end up making a rod for your own back there. If the rotating couplings start to leak. Have you seen the how air tools are suspended on factory floors, they are held on a sort of sprung cable but the hose is able to loop to be above head height when the tool isn't being used.

Avoiding the floor can only be a good thing though.

I'd definitely be looking upwards. What about a swing out boom(s), with enough flexible hose at the pivot end to allow the full range of movement throughout the arc, and the boom(s) sized to suit. hoses just dropping off the end with quick connects?

Advantages no fancy rotating joints, and would still allow hoists, gantry cranes etc to be used. Also easy enough made to suit, just a simple top and bottom pivot, and boom..

Number and size of booms to suit the range of "arcs" over the workshop space and bench / machine placement..


Agreed on the no hoses on the floor, sparks, etc will eventually damage them, only a question of time.

As above, never used retractable hoses at work, normally use spring balancers to support tool/hose.
