armoured cable

I'm getting a new armoured cable from the Maine's to the garage.
but not sure what I need amp wise.
I want to lay it myself and the get the lecy man to wire it in.
what I would like is to keep it separate from the house fuse box and have one fitted in my garage.
just bought a portamig 215amp ,ok it needs to be wired up to 16amp .
so I figured 30 amp should do but I find confusing is what cable etc do I need?
is this ok?

People need to know how long the cable will actually be once installed.

If you are using the full 15m at 16 amps (4kw) run under ground then you need 2.5mm2

If in free air 1.5mm2

If the full 30amps (8kw) then 6mm2 in free air or 10mm2 under ground

3 ft of it will be under ground and the rest free air. it'll probably be about
10mtrs long .
and about 1/2 mtr either end so he can cut off what he doesn't need.

The feed from my old house to garage is in 10mm, runs a 170A TIG flat-out no problem at 27A.

Have the exact same task so hope it's OK to ask here - is the free air vs ground thing to do with heat dissipation?

I need to run around 15 metres from house to garage. The cable exits the house about 6 feet up and runs along the top of a 6-foot fence to my garage.

At the mo it's just a 'flat' grey cable - Twin & Earth? Sorry - electrickal idiot speaking.
It looks easy for the missus to chop when de-foresting the mass of ivy etc on the fence.... Want to go armoured.

i work in Civil Engineering and got myself a length of 14mm2 wire armoured cable used for supplying street lights. ive just installed this to power my garage running frm a RCD fused spur from my socket ring main. the other end goes into a 2 output consumer unit with seperate circuits for sockets (32A) and lighting (6A).

if you see the lads repairing your local street lighting, ask them for a length, it might cost you a couple of cans of lager but thats definatley cheaper than the £75 for 25m i saw in B&Q last week!

Along the top of a fence is considered a no-no. Wall would be ok as no flexing, but fences move.

Makes sense, the fence is wobbly now having been there since the early 80's... Fence will be rebuilt next year, and I'll add a tube to run the cable through.
