hi guys can i pick your brain,can i use argoshield light to dc tig mild steel 16 gauge auto panel cant rember

Argoshield light is for MIG welding fairly thin mild steel such as car bodies, and is the best gas for that purpose. If you want to do MIG and TIG, but only have one gas cylinder, then pure argon will do both jobs. It is not quite as controllable with the MIG, but ok.

I wasted two years trying to Tig weld using Argon Mix.
You can get welds that look almost convincing but are in reality crap and damn hard to achieve. I spent two years on the internet asking about my problems with Tig welding convinced it was my lack of knowledge /experience. Then some sucker probably on this forum asked what gas I was using.
Did I feel stupid?
My original plan was to have both welders plumbed into the one bottle.
Using pure Argon for Mig welding you get welds that have little penetration and leave a horribly raised bead. For Mig (Metal Inert gas) in actual fact MAG (Metal Active Gas) the oxygen in the mix has the role of breaking the surface tension allowing the weld to spread and the CO2 I think helps with penetration. The gas mix for MIG is Argon, Co2 plus a bit of Oxygen, the exact amounts vary according to the job and I cant remember the proportions.
The best person to discuss this business is TechnicAl he properly knows his onions.
As a slight diversion can anybody explain why MAG welding is almost universally known as MIG.
I hope that helps Tommy avoid the frustration I can vividly remember. I was so disgusted that I flogged my Tig welder, wish to hell I had kept it.

To paraphrase Chunko', don't use pure argon for mig, it's rubbish.
Probably, because most people don't know the difference and those that do don't care. It is now just used to describe the process where you have a continous wire being fed as opposed to using an electrode or a TIG welder.
MIG: using pure Argon and or Helium as against MAG: using CO2 or a mixture of Argon/CO2 and or with O2. If you say you are using a MIG then most welding people will know what welding process you are using.
Argon and Helium don't break down as they are inactive as in the "I" in MIG and don't react with the molten metal being deposited, whereas CO2 breaks down and is active with the molten metal as in the "A" in MAG.
