I can't argue with your logic, but statistically thousands of welders are left with wound-up regs forever, right across the world... go into any serious fab shop and ask them if they depressurise theirs at the end of day, or weekend... they'll look at you funnyThe main reasons to depressurise a reg is first of all for safety, not a good idea to leave 3000 psi sitting being held in by some brass & rubber. If it gets hit or knocked over it could be quite dangerous! Put it this way - would you leave a loaded shotgun lying around in your workshop?
The other reason is to relieve the pressure on the diaphragm & internals of the reg. If you leave the reg permanently under pressure it will become inaccurate & the diaphragm can get damaged.
Also, with the slow leaks that nearly every welder in the world has, the reg will depressurise in a day or two anyway.
