Are wire spools supposed to fit on only one way?

I found the Clarke 0.9mm wire it comes with to be awful. This little set was my first welder to see if I could learn at all - & the Clarke wire is a hindrance as its so rubbish.
The Wire type I switched was I think made by SIP, and the wire type was E71-TGS (Halfords stocked it) in 0.8mm.
The 0.8mm went through the machine as-is, with the 0.9mm tip with no issues I noted.

If this was your first ever attempt at welding what reference do you have to say the wire was terrible?

Also, yes 0.8mm wire will go through a 0.9mm tip...you will probably also get away with 0.8 through a 1mm tip, I dont actually know what tip I have in my mig, it might actually be a 1mm as the last lot of 0.9mm wire i had kept jamming so I put a bigger tip in, dont think I changed it back but its had 4kg of 0.8 through it since.


What do your welds look like with the sip wire?

I've seen some shocking welds from a robot. So much so, a rework station had to be put into the process.

A robot can only do what it's told (programmed) to do and it does it very accurately every time, the problem is usually variation in piece parts or parts not being presented in the same place every time due to the fixture.

I used to operate Fanuc robots on an assembly line...1 robot would pick up lead plates with suction then put it in a stack, alternating which side the tab was sticking out the top, then another would grab the whole pack, put it in a jig, then a third would clamp the jig and fly it over to another part of the line for the packs to be pressed Into a battery box...except when the jigs got worn, every now and then they wouldnt lock and when the third robot spun round at speed it flung everything out and there would be a cloud of lead based confetti and fibre paper...we had to wait ages for the dust to settle because of how harmful it was containing lead...used to have 1 day a week to clean the cage out in full air feed masks until they figured out a better locking system

Oh yes, programme crap in, you get crap out. I think there was one weld that the robot couldn't physically get to on the jig. Hence the rework. That was on the BMW mini front and rear subframes

Because the machine instantly worked considerably better, which helped me to learn & get better as soon as I switched away from the Clarke wire.

My Clarke 102NG is long gone, I have had an Oxford MigMaker 180-1 for I dunno, 2 years plus now. My welds never have (& maybe never will ) looked that great, & they certainly didn't with the wee Clarke, but I felt like the Clarke was for me all but unusable with the Clarke Flux Core - either cold welds on top of the thin metal I was trying to weld, or blowing holes - no kind of in-between. On better wire it was still limited of course, but had better range.

(I'm also hoping to aquire an old tatty Murex 165 off a mate. When I used it at his a while ago I just got on with it & it welded thin metal really nicely)

Agreed, they're good on thin stuff, just picked up a murex autolynx (20a min) with a wire feed issue (just hoping it's not a power issue)
