One of m y neighbours is ribble Valley 4x 4 he specialises in the landrovers and was trained at a main dealer. You will need parts so look him up lol
Never thought of a landcruiser or shogun? I did a year with mitsubushi when my first go alone failed I do rate the shogun and Toyota is Toyota after all
I know some are hooked on the landrover thing though so if it's for you go for it! Only the townies and the contract hire folk buy discos here

The RRS is the same vehicle in a different suit, there are some slightly tougher suspension bushes and many use them when replacing D3 bits. The D3 in my opinion far more versatile with 7 seats and more room inside.

The difference in the more modern vehicles is the fact they have been engineered for the road with whilst retaining offroad ability. If you put a set of knobby tyres on a D3 it would easily out class an old Series even with an average driver.

If you want all the D3 knowledge then disco3.co.uk, there are dozens of how to guides(even as far as body removal) and loads of people who know them inside out. A really helpful bunch too.

You will read all the horror stories but as we are aware 90% of people only join a car forum when they have a problem.

Some good offroading pictures too, there's one of a D3 on a rocky trail and has one rear wheel 2 foot off the ground and another where the guy has water over the top of the bonnet.

There are a lot of people who will insist that you need an HSE but on the early cars even the low spec models have everything you could ever need in a family car. My wife drives an 'S' which is one above base, has heated screen,4 heated seats, Auto,Bluetooth phone. It does everything, I've had 3.5t behind it on many occassions, filled to the roof with camping gear. Last year we were at family gathering on the west coast of Scotland, we all had a good breakfast and made sure everyone had been to the toilet and car filled with diesel then drove all the way back to Hereford with 2 kids without stopping once no dramas. My wife always get's out and pats it's bonnet and says "Well done car" after a journey like that. Very easy to drive and I would say there are very few cars that you family would be safer in.

One thing to remember is after 23/03/06 the road tax is £490

Not having that most will never get close to driving any 4x4 to the limits of a bog std series landy
In fact most wouldn't belive what they can do. I took a tractor mechanic to his first ever comp safari and he was totally flabbergasted
There is a Landrover off road Experiance place near us. You could do it in 2 wd most days. A good gypsy lad could likely do it in a transit lol

There is no substitute for a good driver and good tyres, I know a guy who is and offroad instructor in the army, he took a brand new Navara around the extreme course at Eastnor Castle at one of the shows, when they came out his son lent out the window and asked the marshall where the start was
