A mate of mine has just bought a Durfour 48. He lives in Oz and sometimes in NZ and he’s planning to sail it over to the UK!

Oh yes I have memories of sanding varnish when I was a kid, my dad had a yacht, every year he would tow it from Ayr harbour to our farm with a Massey Fergusson, 14 miles, then the winter restoration would start, it was a wooden boat about 30ft, it took a hell of a lot of sanding, painting and varnishing, fibreglass is so much easier, pressure wash, mop and polish job done. She sure looks lovely, pity the poor sod who has to keep on top of all that woodwork!
I still have nightmares of wet and dry sanding the bottom usually in March, its makes them faster if the bottoms smooth, even if you have frost bite in your hands and cant ever go sailing.Oh yes I have memories of sanding varnish when I was a kid, my dad had a yacht, every year he would tow it from Ayr harbour to our farm with a Massey Fergusson, 14 miles, then the winter restoration would start, it was a wooden boat about 30ft, it took a hell of a lot of sanding, painting and varnishing, fibreglass is so much easier, pressure wash, mop and polish job done.
Yeh you and me both then, and sanding all, the yacht varnish on the top and the rails and mast!I still have nightmares of wet and dry sanding the bottom usually in March, its makes them faster if the bottoms smooth, even if you have frost bite in your hands and cant ever go sailing.
Must be in your blood though, and you live in a good climate, though you’ve the general public to contend with, hiring a boat to Joe Bloggs, what could possibly go wrong ……..?Boats, nothing but problems, especially if you rent them out.
Are we still talking about boats ?its makes them faster if the bottoms smooth,
Imagine a hairy bottom with osmosis. Are we still talking about boats ?![]()
we are, my father had racing yachts, the bottom would be sanded, anti fouled then wet and dry with 600 then 1200, saved us 2 nano seconds every 12 hours of sailing…..fish slime was the next stage……apparently. Are we still talking about boats ?![]()
Boat reverse parking in the Greek islands is great spectator sport! The amount of charter boats with captain clueless at the helm that get in a tangled mess lying sideways across others anchor lines can be quite amusing, unless its your anchor line.Boats, nothing but problems, especially if you rent them out.
Not something you hear of so much now since the epoxy type coatings are all the rage. I remember boats been blasted below the water line, to remove the non bonded gel coat where osmosis was suspected, then a tend round them and a dehumidifier to pull the moisture out of the glass. Before been epoxy sealed and smoothed out.Imagine a hairy bottom with osmosis.
Have you been looking at my pictures online againImagine a hairy bottom with osmosis.
And now the current trend to go fast is to foil. Must save hours of sanding and polishing.we are, my father had racing yachts, the bottom would be sanded, anti fouled then wet and dry with 600 then 1200, saved us 2 nano seconds every 12 hours of sailing…..fish slime was the next stage……apparently.
Guess so if you just do the foil! And now the current trend to go fast is to foil. Must save hours of sanding and polishing.
