OK, you have decided that you are gonna purchase a welder & save yourself some money by sticking it together yourself; which welder to buy? ARC or MIG. Electric ARC or MMA (Manual Metal Arc) was the first electric arc welding process on the market.
+ Points of ARC are that they are now VERY cheap to purchase (sub £50) & fine for thicker section welding.
- Points are JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING if you intend welding thin material such as car bodywork. FORGET EM if you want to weld thin sheet steel!
There is a device on the market that claims it will enable an ARC welder to weld thin sheet but forget it & buy a MIG.
MIG is MUCH easier to use aswell.
ARC welding still has it's purpose & is widely used in industry, but FORGET the DIY type machines marketed for thin sheet metal welding - they are designed COMPLETELY for thicker section welding.
