Mostly I have found that arc instability is caused by contamination of the work, filler or tungsten, by variations of torch angle or height, or by shielding gas failures including lack of back purge where required. All these will adversely affect the weld.Does the quality (stability / smoothness ?) of the arc make much actual difference to the weld ?
Is there very much difference from one machine / manufacturer to another ?

you didn't say TIG....
in short, yes.Does the quality (stability / smoothness ?) of the arc make much actual difference to the weld ?
