No problem Mike, we are hoping to get our building work kicked off in the next few months and this will be the first thing to come down. I'll let you know when we have a better idea of when it will start.

I doubt greatly I'd attempt any form of self build. I have done such things before, so quite capable. However a toddler and the prospect of moving house whilst negotiating the take-over of my employers business leaves me with the certain knowledge it would never get finished!

I must admit I'm heartened, the costs if I don't go to a big name firm are less than I expected. As it happens I know a good roofer, who's brother happens to be a good joiner.

Look at the costs of an insulated half height brick cavity wall and a wooden top that's insulated with an insulated Kinspan apex roof , you can always put some deeper foundations in place where you might want to put an overhead girder cranes support legs or where you might plan to put the Bridgeport mill etc when you can afford one. . Put plenty of underground ducts in the foundations for water ,waste water , power and air if you have an outside compressor noise muffling box made.
The insulation helps stop a lot of condensation as well as absorb noise .

My brother has a transit type pick up (at the moment) - he may be able to sort something if it's still roadworthy at the time. I never know one week to the next what wreck he is driving round in!!

Nah you get a small builder with a good rep who isn't VAT registered.

Personally I would say forget about concrete panels and instead block and render with a tiled roof. Least it will give you back the value of building it then.

Why would you render? And would you do both
inside or outside or both?

Don't underestimate how heavy they are.

I can only just about move the sections of ours single handed - as in potential hernia territory.

...and there are a lot of sections!

(is outside the scope of a domestic trailer, without a lot of trips)

After taking on the re - errecting of several second hand sectional garage jobs over the years this is what I've discovered.
It maybe of use to you .

Make the slab base about 8 " bigger than the building & power float it dead smooth if possible, as it pays dividends in the long run.
Clean any gunge of the sections where they join or sit on the floor slab well before you start the reassembly to speed up the re assembly .
Put new sealing washers on the roof panels o r coat existing undersides of the washers with plenty of non set mastic to make them more rain resistant . Use double sides padded sealing tape along the ridges where they overlap to stop rain being blown in under the top edge of the roofing panels .

Be prepared to have to buy all new nut's & bolts & some decent Turbo screws for the reassembly . If possible use a non setting mastic to set it on accurately made marking out chalk lines on the floor slab and to seal the gaps /joints of the panels before you pull them up tight .
Once erected put a decent fillet of PVA bonder in the mix mortar ...... most of the fillets were 4 " high & 4" wide all along the floor edges both inside & out as that will prevent water creep under the walls & help stop the wind pushing it out of true over the years .

I pre made numerous angle iron brackets that were held to the angled edges of the top & bottom of the panels by the joining bolts & used angled/wedged washers to bring them out square . Having done this I nearly always stapled builders damp proof membrane along it all to make a water proof barrier
by stapling it on to a frame of treated decking wood bolted on the brackets and then put on 1/4 " ply panels that had insulation batts behind them .
Painting the whole thing in brilliant white silk emulsion for light reflection as it's far easier to do with the garage empty than it is to do a year or so later when everything is in place 7b needs moving to give you access to the walls & roof .

It was only after that that I put the electrical conduits & consumer unit in that normally allowed for at least 12 double gang two pole switched sockets . The O/S flood lights and a few other lights were set on conduit-ed wire , the switches were usually double pole fused switches which had neon indicators in them as well . I found it prudent to have at least two of the two gang sockets either side of each door way & the main door opening .
My current block work garage has these door sockets as a single trip protected socket . They are very handy for working outside or running the mower. etc off.

Knowing where the frame timbers were made it easy to screw heavier vertical timbers to it for cabinets and carcasses etc. & to anchor the work bench securely

A block garage without render can actually devalue houses in a residential area due to the looks of it. Simple layer of render puts it into the same league a normal brick garage adding value to your house. Much like the tiled roof for it's costs it's worth doing - pay you back if/when you need to sell a house.

As for cement rendering/plaster the inside it's not necessary. Makes no real difference.

Id actually probably use NHL3.5, just as im more familiar with that than i am cement (and its more sticky) but the surfece of the slabs makes me wonder. Id rather not spend out on stainless mesh.

Nextdoor, laid a base and a company came in installed a sectional garage and then rendered a brick effect, it's been up 12+yrs and looks as good now as it did then. You have to get up close to see it's rendered and not bricks.

Sectional garages are sometimes advertised as free to collector / dismantler.

This is a done thing,3 years ago a bloke i know went for a stone slab one and paid his mate £80 to help dismantle it and erect at the side of his house.

Power and water inside.
