Those waves from the video weren't from the great lakes were they? Looked far too big!

I spent some time in Duluth Minnesota on a few work trips. On some time off, I went hiking. Hiked from Gooseberry falls down to Lake Superior. When I got to the lake, you would have sworn yo were at the ocean. Bright sunny day, light winds and 5' waves. It is the narrow end of the lake and you can not see across it. It is supposed to be over 2000' deep.

That night I walked along the shore near my hotel. I came upon 3 historic signs; all said nearly the same thing: "On this site was xxx before the lake pummled it into oblivion." One was a huge grain offloading pier, there was not a sign it ever existed.

The locals say in the winter, the waves and wind will pile slabs of ice on the shore 30' high.

It is a brutal area. There have been many ships lost. Winters are on par with the North Sea or Bearing Straights.

The weather was 20-40F in the time I was there. A regular heat wave The guys I worked with said "you aught to move up here". Heh, no, I know better. Besides, drive around and you see houses with snowmobiles parked in the driveway so they can drive them to work. Downtown Duluth has catwalks between buildings so you don't have to go outside. Cars have plugs hanging out the front grill so you can plug them in to keep the engine warm enough to start in the morning.

Beautiful area, but brutal weather.

Theres a great book published by channel 4 books, although i don't thinks its in print any more called mayday, all about great maritime disasters, and goes in depth about some of the design flaws, and covers disasters like the "Estonia" a great read if your into that kind of thing, BTW Bruce not shouting about the Cricket Tday

Wow great videos Bruce. Closest I've ever been was in the north west Scotish Isles where we went through the Corryvreckan (world's third largest whirlpool) in a ribbed raider. Admittedly it wasn't swirling much at the time, but still!

Falls of Lora Connel near Oban, now this is a white knuckle dive, did it once, never again one lad ended up with cracked ribs when he got got caught up in a pile of scaffold pole, probably lost while doing bridge repairs. Link shows how wicked it gets, plus explains the tidal phenomena, this happens in very few places in the world.
