Anything about mig in BS5135?

So I'm reading through the specs. for a basic railing job and it states that all welding is to be to BS5135. Its obviously a mig job, are they suggesting I should arc weld it up? Also it's my understanding that this standard is no longer alive.
It's probably a regular occurrence that standards are misquoted, would you suggest I note this in my application and suggest a standard I could work to (good to high comes to mind..) or just agree with them from the off and concentrate on winning the job, not complicating things and possibly belittling the engineering dept. (never worked in the past). I may have misunderstood the standard from the off and be wrong myself-it's been a looong day.

This standard is no longer valid from what I know it is now

BS5135 is mostly concerned with the avoidance of hydrogen cracking......its mostly focused on stick but there are factors that can be applied to MIG

Does it still exist Al. I thought it was replaced with bs en 1011-1 2009.

Im pretty sure it has been superceeded but that doesnt mean it cant be used.........I guess you can still buy it.

The thought of pre and post heating arc welds in sections of mild steel railings gives me the heeby geebies.

To be honest unless the steel is about 4" thick or they have chosen a higher strength grade its unlikely that BS5135 will invoke a preheat. So in effect it doesnt really create any issues apart from having to check the spec.
MIG is classed as low hydrogen so it will be rated alongside vac packed or just baked Low Hys

Thanks Al, that's good info-it's just bs10025 steel nothing fancy.
Is there any brand or spec. of mig wire that is considered particularly low Hydrogen?

I used to work for Lincoln so I know thats low because I tested it..........I also tested some others that werent so low (even though all MIG wire is "considered" to be low)
I think if you stick to proper manufacturers it will be low (Esab / Murex / Bohler / SAF)

Aye, this wee job is full of BS for everything, and a fully designed spec. to boot. In a basic post and panel railing setup the lugs welded to the post are made of angle. I guess that makes it fool-proof to get them square but pretty darn ugly. I would prefer a nice chunky tab square to BS939. AAHHHHH its contagious!!!

Oh yeah RSA for rail tabs? That's plain stupidity as well as pug ugly. Keep your mouth shut do as they ask and get paid- then tell nobody you did it and use an unmarked van if you have to fit it. I figure this guy gets his knowledge from a book he don't understand and then invents some "better" stuff just to show all he aint copy n pasting

Anyhow something is square or not square on a railing why does anyone need to quote more, its not like a railing needs to be correct to the minute of angle

I'm glad most of my work is heavy industry. Mostly, the drawings and spec are pretty good as my clients are high level engineering companies so they know their stuff.

I do the odd railing job for a local builder that I know (my ex bird's dad) and the drawings and spec he gets given from local authorities are unusable. I'd hate to be in his shoes. Every job turns out to be a nightmare because the planners, designers and every other man and his dog that are involved all contradict each other and are as vague as hell. Architect's drawings in comparison to engineering drawings are like an etch-a-sketch.

I'm an archetypal engineer. Everything is very much black and white with me. If something's vague I'll forcefully change it to my way with a founding reason behind the decision. Can't be doing with wishy-washy career turds making stuff up then calling it a design.
