Anyone with experience of Iveco Daily's?

My old LDV Convoy (camper conv) has just about had it.
I've long thought that the Daily would be a natural successor (proper commercial chassis, not plush & as car-like to drive as say a Sprinter, but solid & robust.

I've got my eye on one of the last of the ones (2005) pre-2006 face-lift - a low mileage ex-Council Mobile Office van (looks a lot like the Minibus from the outside). 2.3L

Googling is a mixed bag - generally positive (& of course its a lot more complex than my LDV with a Ford 2.5di Banana non-turbo, no-ECU van)..... but what's the view of the Hive Mind on here of the Daily?

My ex has one that she converted to a campervan.
Originally a mini coach from Birmingham patient transport, very plush with nice seats, double glazing & aircon.
It was great when she was using it but leaving it parked up for 2 years caused a lot of rot in the chassis and one of the brake pipes blew.
Hers is a TD but the turbo never seemed to have any effect, fine for her use - lots of miles at a steady 55mph.

Just remember that although low milage it has likely spent a lot of time ticking over not moving which isn't great for engines

There's an onboard heater & generator in the one Ive considered going to see - so hopefully that means the engine run time equates to the mileage.

Hidden rust underneath though I'm aware I need to look for (though we've been told this one has never had any welding repairs - but has had an engine tray?? replaced. So hard to tell without actually seeing the thing, which isn't an option before the weekend.

Mates one years ago used to have problems with rear brakes/handbrake which he had to fertle with every year for test.

Do you recall what year that one is? I think the one I'm on about was also ex-brum council but a mobile office (though quite what they thought they needed one of those for I can't imagine).

We ran one of that era, as above with rust. Mechanically not a problem but did give grief with the pump in the tank throwing up red herrings.

ON the scale of how much it costs to keep an old van on the road - as long as you doin the welding - "tin bashing is cheap".

Yeah it takes a long while - but it's cheap for meterials...

You can buy a whole van load of sheet metal/seam sealer/A18 MIG wire/gas for the price of one NOX sensor on a Euro6 van (and they have two of them).

It just depends if you got the spare time and the will... For an annual national weldathon...

New vans are silly money - that is why I got a 2011 van mate....

I love them as they have a separate chassis and carry weight

Body rots, electrical is low grade
Newer ones suffer from fuel system problems

In one. A mate bought an ex works van. With the blokes sat in it for hours on end, the condensation had collected on the roof, running down and roting out the gutter line. He was driving down the road a few weeks after buying it and the roof came off.

A friend bought a LWB one for a camper conversion and when he showed us it he opened the back doors and I could see the road from the doors all the way to the bulkhead!
He's actually made a nice job if it though.

We have an 04 Renault Master that was converted by a previous owner into a camper for just over 3 years

It's on 182k, we have spent time and money on it but most of that has been reworking some of the camper conversion as it was not done particularly well

Rust wise, it's had a new sill section between the sliding door and the rear wheel and a small repair to the rear of the sill on the drivers side. I also had to do a repair behind the plastic side trims on the passenger side as the was some corrosion there but apart from that it's solid and underneath does not look like a 19yr old van

I changed the front wings, they had some damage as the door check straps were goosed and replaced the check straps to stop it happening again

Yes, front suspension is weird

Mechanically it had a rear caliper 2 years ago and it needs a front wheel bearing

Did 1600 miles travelling around Scotland last month, turned in 31mpg and no issues

The LDV is..... tired. And pretty scruffy now, showing its age.
Last few years I seem to have spent more time under it than in it, & it's worn me down.
Windscreen & seal, knackered wiper rack & wiper motor is iffy. Leaf spring bushes are worn, king pins have play, crank seal oil leak, rear brakes aren't balanced & working right, fuel leak started from I think the lift pump (a real pig to get at), & the brake pressure just failed last time out (so a wheel cyl maybe or the master), and it's leaking water in around the roof seal/gutter area, the wiper spindles, the windscreen seal etc. Oh yes, & its losing a bit of coolant but I haven't spotted any leak point & it's well overdue a cambelt change.
I did a load of welding on the ns chassis 8 or 9 mths ago, but I've not looked too hard at the os - so there could well be more welding needed (& if there isn't now - there will be before long).

Add that lot up - and I think it's daunting and lots of hours under the van in **** conditions and awkward, miserable work & quite a few quid needed.... & right now I think it's finally got me beat.

very good tool IF you buy a good well serviced one to start with. yes will need the usual servicing and rust repairs ,they certainly take weight well.....

Just nod off to sleep next time, goes much quicker. The snoring will also irritate him imensly and get the message across.

oh, look at water resovior, if its stained brown head gasket gone , if bright green/orange (and plastic still clear )basically antifreeze its all good , mind they will run with gasket gone
